An interesting take on child rearing brutality in the past and present.
(Caution. The article uses explicite language to describe many of the abuses, sexual, physical, and emotional, of children.) "... Reformers during the nineteenth century tried to bring the rest of society into the socializing mode by legislation designed to prevent outright battering and sexual abuse of children, which of course still went on in the majority of families around them. But those who tried to oppose buggering and beating boys in schools were opposed by parents who said "It didn't hurt me." Those who tried to pass child labor legislation to reduce horrendous working conditions and hours were labeled Communists.
