PARTY MONSTER
A film review by Steve Rhodes

Copyright 2003 Steve Rhodes

RATING (0 TO ****): 1/2

PARTY MONSTER, the worst comedy since DEATH TO SMOOCHY, is not just merely
bad. It is painfully awful. Based on a documentary of the same name, it
follows Michael Alig (Macaulay Culkin) and James St. James (Seth Green), two
flamboyant and sassy gays, as they waste their life away on heroin and other
drugs. Set in the New York club scene of the 1980s, the movie contains such
comedic putdowns as, "I'd rather suck on a urinal cake." It also uses the
drinking of urine in a failed attempt to generate laughs.

Although the acting is gratingly over-the-top, the worst part of this ugly
movie, shot on cheap-looking video tape, is the make-up and the costume
design. One hopes that, when they give out the Razzies for this year's
worst films, they don't forget PARTY MONSTER, especially the picture's
aforementioned make-up and costumes.

No matter how many drugs Michael and James ingest, their movie never gets
funny. And, when their story turns tragic, I couldn't care less. If for
any reason you walk into PARTY MONSTER, walk out as fast as you can.

PARTY MONSTER runs 1:38, which will seem like an eternity. It is not rated
but might be an R for non-stop hard drug usage as well as language, violence
and sexual situations. It would be acceptable for college students and
older.

The film opens nationwide in the United States on Friday, September 5, 2003.
In the Silicon Valley, it will be showing at the Camera Cinemas.
