Default Paranoid parenting or how experts dictate parenting

Eminent British sociologist at the University of Kent, prolaims that parents
are besiged with propaganda from "the experts."

Everyone is "at risk."

Also, his commentary on spanking.

Fern,

I'm not sure whether this individual is an "Eminent British sociologist"
or not. He does appear to be a Sociology Professor at the University of
Kent. A sociologist is not a child psychologist nor is a sociologist a
researcher in the field of child development. In fact, it doesn't
appear that he has done any research in child development. He didn't
even bother with a methodologically sound meta-analysis. What he wrote
is an editorial article, picking and choosing portions of the discussion
sections of research and other articles that he could take out of
context to make his point in support of spanking.

This is an editorial, Fern. This is not research. This is not even
accurately portrayed research done by others.

You like these editorials that support your position that hitting little
children in the name of discipline is non-violent, loving, and
responsive parenting. What you need to do is read and understand the
research, not just the decades of research on spanking and alternatives
but also child development research on how children best learn, grow,
and develop.

If you would like to debate the article, let me know. I can point you
to research that will refute this individual's claims and I can point
you to research he attempts to include, where you can read studies in
their entirety, rather than picking and choosing phrases out of context
to support an insupportable position.
