How to stop verbal bullying (was Rant: Over indulgent parentsstrike again)
So when she got to kindergarten, the teacher would leave her to read
to the class while she (teacher) took a break or something. Probably back in the cloak room shooting up marijuana. |

Which brings us full-circle to the room full of adult "authority figures" intent on "suggesting" "courses of action" to the already-pounded child. "Surely you WANT to be able to avoid this, right?" "Surely you want to be able to prevent it from happening again, right?" "Surely you want to alter yourself so as to prevent a situation where us adults are forced into the same room with THAT bully, right?" If any answer isn't toward conformity, then repeat the above for another 20 minutes. So, in your view, adults should never offer insight or help to a kid, because the kid will always view it as coercive. Adults should just shut up and do nothing. meh Not at all. Adults should identify the bully and deal with him. |

That tolerance? When does anyone teach it is abnormal to be straight? reading, use books from many cultures, use books that show Yes, it is much better to teach kids about Chinese, Indian and Australian culture than to teach them about George Washington, Lincoln, and Kennedy. Teachers have had those horrible subjects removed from textbooks as they are so unimportant. Those subjects have not been removed. They have just been added to with other heroes and reading of books from other cultures as well as from American and European literature. In math, show the children different ways to solve problems that were developed by various cultures. Now I know why schools are so bad. We are now teaching kids they can do math how they want, regardless of the answer. Do you know that our method of carrying is not the one used in Australia? They seem to do fine with theirs. The methods are different, but the actual *answers* in terms of calculation are the same. Have you ever tried adding in hexadecimal? The answers look different because they are written in a different base, but they aren't incorrect because of that. Have you ever added with seconds, minutes and hours and carried by 60s instead of by tens to do so? Have you ever used some of the shortcuts that many people who are good at thinking about numbers use to do mental arithmetic? Do you really think people get the wrong answer because they do things differently? The PC crowd says that "poor Juanito can't learn," and therefore support the "dumbing down" being spoken of. Pseudoliberals have ruined much of education. Real liberals puke at their ideas. So what is your solution, what is your system that *ELIMINATES* all posibility of such corruption? Can't achieve perfection - only strive for it. The answer: great teachers. This will require actually paying teachers enough to make it a worthwhile profession. So you don't have a solution. Thought as much. You are apparently illiterate. I'm sorry. And resorts to insults. |

At any rate, the story goes that the children were asked to add up all the numbers from 1 to 100 and get the answer, this student came up and gave the answer after a minute because he used the Gauss method which doesn't require that you put the numbers down and add them up the way most children have been taught to do. Noticing the pattern that 1 + 100 = 101 and 2 + 99 = 101, and noticing that there are 50 pairs that add up to 101, the calculation is simple. At any rate, the teacher in this case punished the student. That hopefully won't happen where the teacher understands what is happening and is actually teaching the students to recognize such patterns. -- Dorothy There is no sound, no cry in all the world that can be heard unless someone listens ..
