Well, we went and saw the munchkin this morning! It looks loads more
like a baby than it did at the first ultrasound, and more to the point
they could examine it for all sorts of things. They conclusively ruled
out the spectre of spinal bifida, said there were no markers of
concern for Down's Syndrome although other tests, with results not in
yet, will be more conclusive in ruling that out, and that all systems
they could see looked healthy, well-shaped, and doing fine. We got
photographs to give to besotted grandparents (and keep for our pretty
darn besotted selves). And they said they couldn't tell for sure
because the baby insisted on keeping its legs tucked up funny, but
they *think* it's a girl. I will be happy enough if they're wrong and
it turns out a boy after all, but yesterday I met the world's cutest
little two-month-old girl and right now I want a baby just like her,
so I'm pleased at the news.

Glad the news are so good, Naomi. And congratulations on your "90% girl"
(boy or girl, the most important thing is that it is healthy!). Hope the
other results you are waiting for will be good, too!

I second that. All that is important is that the baby is healthy. Great news!

How are you planning to pronounce Lorelei? I can think of a couple of
different ways (not sure which is correct). I imagine if you pronounce
it with a "lori" sound at the beginning, it might make people think to
shorten it. I would pronounce it like "laura-lie" (roughly--I'm really
bad an explaining pronunciation in writing!), which I don't think leaves
room for a "Lori" nickname.

Laura-lie is how I say it and can't imagine people say it differently.
Figures - lol.

Lowreh-lee :-). Which, iirc, is how it's pronounced in German.

I'll be pronouncing it more or less as you described . . . but I think people
will still say what they want to, because the difference in pronunciation is
just a regional variation and most people don't take note of things like that.

Our last name is Sholly, and it is supposed to be pronounced Show-ly. Most
people pronounce it to rhyme with Holly, and unless they ask I usually don't
even bother to correct them because I get so tired of it.

Even worse, I pronounce my name Lez-lie, whereas other people pronounce the
same name Less-lie. When I was a little girl I used to make a big deal about
correcting people who said it wrong, but gradually over the years I gave up, to
the point that many of my close friends now pronounce it the wrong way.

All this is a long roundabout way of saying that I believe people will call her
whatever they want to, unless they are firmly told not to!
