HONEY
A film review by Steve Rhodes

Copyright 2003 Steve Rhodes

RATING (0 TO ****): * 1/2

Let's hope that HONEY, by music video director Bille Woodruff, isn't
intended to be autobiographical, since Michael Ellis (David Moscow), the
music video director in the story, has only two things on his mind. While
on the set, Michael spends most of his time playing with his Game Boy. When
he bothers to look up, he issues only vague commands such as, "Something is
missing. I don't know what." Besides his electronic toy, the only other
thing that interests him is getting into the pants of his latest star
discovery.

Honey Daniels (Jessica Alba), whose mother wants her to be a ballerina, has
a dream -- to dance in a music video. Once she achieves that, thanks to the
lecherous Michael, she instantly moves from the chorus to center stage, and,
within a week, she is offered the opportunity to do the choreography as
well. She, of course, never suspects that Michael might harbor some
ulterior motives for his generous support of her career aspirations.

This hip hop version of FLASHDANCE is tolerable during the brief music video
numbers but insufferably pretentious and downright dumb the rest of the
time. The film's only successful scene occurs in a traditional music video
number that runs in a window to the right of the closing credits. Save your
money and have a lot more fun by watching MTV instead of this turkey.

HONEY runs a long 1:33. It is rated P-13 for "drug content and some sexual
references" and would be acceptable for kids around 11 and up.

The film opens nationwide in the United States on Friday, December 5, 2003.
In the Silicon Valley, it will be showing at the AMC and the Century
theaters.
