Default Lead test for paint?

Is there any way to test a paint to see if it contains lead? We are
debating buying a bedroom set that is painted, it is 27 years old
though. We would really like to refinish it to be wood stained rather
then painted.

Of course, I'm pregnant so can't be around lead when it's getting
sanded. Just wondering if I could findout somehow.

Yes, there are lead test kits. You can get them
online or in most hardware stores. Here's an evaluation
by OSHA of two test kits:

You can buy the test kits at Lowes, Home Depot, or any other home
improvement store. You will need to make sure you check all layers of paint.
If the furniture has been repainted there could be a layer of lead based
paint under the current layer.

You do still need to wear a mask while sanding (though I'm sure you're aware
of that)

Here in New Zealand the health protection services will test for lead for
free if you take a sample in to them. Not sure if they do that where you
are!
