Hi Jolinda! :-)

Hi Brigitte

You know me already so I won't give you a bio. LOL! ;-)

Heehee.. I am glad to see you here, sweetie

The trolls around here come in waves it seems. Like Dorothy (toto)
said, if it gets too thick, hop on over to alt.mothers. We hug trolls
over there. ;-) ;-)

LOL.. So, are there threads I should avoid, and clue words not to mention in my
headers?
Is alt.mothers much different than misc.kids?
I guess I should go check that ng out

hugs

Hi Jolinda, and welcome :-)
I'm Nan, mom to ds (almost 20), dd (3.9) and jellybean due 4/6/04

Nan

Hi, Nan

Thank you for the welcome. Smile.
Oh goodness.. you got a 20yr old son, too.
My son is such a good kid/young man. He is in the service--well, the ROTC
program. I can't believe he is 20( turned 20 on Nov 19th).

Congrats on the jellybean! I want another baby, but with my endo..and my
husband having a vasectomy, I don't see that happening. LOL.. Jellybean is an
adorable nickname!!

Yes, welcome Jolinda.

Thank you! I too am in WA (Lake Forest Park -- just northeast of Lake
Washington), with
just one -- an 11-year-old daughter, in the Shoreline schools

That is great. How do you like the weather? I like our seasons, but could do
without the rain/drizzle.

And it's sad -- the trolls abound -- but that's why there are kill filters.

Yeah, I hear you. I will have to learn how to do some filtering :0)

thanks for the welcome.

I am proud.

And it shows!! I think its great that you enjoy what you do. There are a lot of
people who have jobs that they don't like. They just go through the motions.
You are very lucky

used to teach high school math, but decided that
preschool was the place because we had so many kids coming
into school with no experience of the things I think are importan

I agree. Preschool math is for kids starting at the age of 3? Did you find that
teens were harder to teach than preschoolers? I am referring to bad habits
already formed.etc.

Math is taught through playing with blocks and by doing a lot of
activities that let kids get the ideas down before they ever memorize
any arithmetic facts.

Great! I think I am going to start this concept with Sammi (samantha). What do
you think preschoolers should know before entering school? Can you give me some
ideas on helping Sammi..and eventually, Shay?

Thanks for the admiration. I think it's just that I love this age.
They are so ready to learn and I get to see the whole world
new through their eyes.

Well, you are very welcome. You seem like a very patient person--I wish I were
more patient. I am working on it, though

My dad had 9 siblings. It's getting hard now though since many
have passed away.

That is a large family, too. My grandmother always said that she wanted to die
before her children. She felt that that was the way it should be. All her
children are still alive and they range from 51 to 66 yrs old. My uncle asked a
college prof. what the odds were with that. He did some calculations on his
fancy thingy-ma-jig. The prof said somewhere in the trillions. My grandma had
a hard life, but got her most important wish----for her kids to outlive her

She was a wonderful
lady and I remember her with love.

Awww..... soo sweet. I understand your feelings.

Hugs,
Jolinda

can't wait to start digging in to your 16 yo's issues.
From what I already know, we'll have LOTS to talk about. :-)

OH NO! LOL.. I tell ya, she is going to drive me insane( more insane. lol) I
had a panic attack so bad last night( hands and feet turned purple), sam had to
call the hosptial. She is being rather selfish right now. Please don't tell me
its her job as a teen to be that way..... grrr

Hi Jolinda,

Welcome!! Hopefully you can help me with the teenagers and I can help you
with the little ones ;o) I have three girls and they are 11, 8 and 6 (two
weeks she will be 7) years old. There are a few trolls that hang about, but
if you ignore them and don't respond, they will get tired.

I teach three to five year olds in a multiage class, atm.

One problem with teens was that they were afraid to take chances
and get the wrong answer. So many were afraid of math and they
also had been taught to do things *only* in one way. As you get
into higher mathematics, you have to learn that there may be many
different ways to approach a problem and that all of these can lead
to a correct answer.

Another problem was that children had been taught incorrect
definitions and they couldn't seem to understand that they had
misunderstood something they had gotten in their heads. One
of my big quarrels with preschool teachers is that in math they
are not willing to let kids know that a square is a special kind of
rectangle, so the kids get to high school and they can't understand
geometric ideas that include squares in the category of rectangles.

Math is taught through playing with blocks and by doing a lot of
activities that let kids get the ideas down before they ever memorize
any arithmetic facts.

Great! I think I am going to start this concept with Sammi (samantha).

Math starts with counting. Music is important, clapping to a beat,
being able to feel a rhythm. Mostly, it's intuitive. They don't have
to have the words for the numbers or recognize the numerals, but
they need to be able to *feel* the beat and go in a measured pace,
imho. We used to count the stairs as we went up them when my
kids were 18 months old or so. That gave them a *feel* for the
one to one correspondence. So do many things they can do when
they help you around the house. Setting the table is an activity that
requires one to one correspondence for example. Pairing up socks
in the laundry is a matching and patterning activity that helps with
both math and reading. Sorting things into like sets (buttons, etc.)
helps with ideas about sets that have the same number of things
in it which leads to the idea of a function later on. Reading
stories and changing the name of the main character and talking
about that leads to using variables. Let your kids explore measuring
with blocks. They learn how to compare sizes, weights, volumes,
etc. The same is true of playing with water or sand with different
sizes of containers. They learn that the amount of water or sand
can stay the same even though the shape of the container changes.

So many of the things that are needed come from everyday
activities that most parents used to do all the time, but have
not done so much of in the modern world. Cook from scratch
using recipes and let your children help. Sew or do carpentry
and let the kids learn to measure.

As for what kids need to know before school, there are no
*academic* skills that I would directly teach. Teach them to
explore and not to be afraid to fail and try again. Teach them
to listen (mostly by listening carefully to them). Let them
question no matter how silly the questions seem to you. When
you don't know the answer, say *let's look it up and see if we
can find out* and explore the questions together.

I teach pre-reading and pre-math skills as well as science
and social studies in class using hands-on activities that the
kids explore. At this age it's all about active learning through
playing.
