Baby won't accept breast milk bottle after attempting formula - help!
Cathy Kearns wrote:
I had the same problem after having to return to work after my middle son was born. I never was able to pump any amount greater than a couple of ounces, despite trying 3 different types of pumps, and he would adamantly refuse breast milk from a bottle after I'd saved enough to actually fill a bottle . What worked for us was to have someone else feed the baby, in about a week he had adjusted. "Elana Kehoe" wrote in message ... Why would you give him formula (I just don't get it after your "precious milk" line)? I'm not the original poster, but when I was breastfeeding, despite feeding on demand, and then pumping afterward in an attempt to get supply up I had to resort to supplimenting with formula. Perhaps that is what she meant by "precious milk", certainly every drop was precious to me. |

Baby won't accept breast milk bottle after attempting formula - help!
Does anyone have any ideas?
Our 9 week old baby boy had no problems with accepting a breast milk bottle but we tried to give him formula at the weekend which he hated and refused to accept. I just assumed we would have to persevere, however, today when I left him with a friend whilst I went shopping she found that he refused to take his expressed milk bottle (what a waste of my precious milk!). He just screamed at her, and at me when I attempted it on my return (to check whether it was a personal thing!). I guess he associated the bottle with his recent experience of odd tasting formula. Has anyone else come across this, and if so, what can I do? Are there any magic tricks I can try apart from just persevering with the breast milk bottle (or getting hubby to try it). ....and to think I was looking forward to 2 nights out for the first time this week...serves me right! Thanks Rebecca |

That sounds just so frustrating, and new moms do not need anything else frustrating. There could be so many reasons your wonderful DS is refusing, it is hard to tell from here. I can give you anecdotal stories related to my DS: he ultimately refused all formula offered but was bf'd [with ebm during weekdays while I was at work] until he self weaned at 11 months. Getting the ebm was interesting as I could only pump enough if he was nursing at the same time. Fun. Anyway, I've also read that some children will accept the differences, but you should get them accustomed with you around to nurse [but far away on the other side of the house so baby can't detect your presence] if the attempt to feed formula doesn't work. My suggestion, though, is probably not what you would have expected: contact a lactation consultant. The LC may well be able to either help you with production for ebm, or help you transition your DS to formula for periods when you are out. Do be aware, though, that the less you nurse the less your body things you need to produce, and your supply could decrease, at least for a time, if you use formula for a time. Good luck. My thoughts are with you. I sure do remember wanting to get that night out, too! -Aula -- see my creative works on ebay under http://snurl.com/369o and on zazzle at http://snurl.com/38oh |
