How can I prevent engorgement? :)

Hi all,

Here I am, pregnant again--I used to post here a while back (my son
was born in July of 2002).


Question: I'm due in October & am not planning to breastfeed.
Is there ANYTHING I can do/take so that my milk doesn't come in and/or
I won't have to suffer with engorgement again?

I asked my OB about it & he said there used to be pills that he could
prescribe, but they have been banned by the FDA in the U.S.
Anyone have information? Can I purchase them in Canada??!!

Hi Ms. F! Congratulations on your pregnancy!

As for engorgement, I don't have any good news for you. You can't prevent
it, to my knowledge, and the medication your MD is talking about
(bromicriptine, I think) hasn't been banned, exactly, but the FDA asked that
the manufacturers no longer include lactation supression as an approved use
(the med is still being used to treat other conditions). At any rate, the
good news is that the reason the drug is no longer prescribed for lactation
supression is that it didn't show any benefits that can't be acheived by the
traditional methods of pain relievers, ice packs, etc. So sure, you could
probably get a physician to prescribe them for you, here or in Canada,
but... they don't work any better than the usual stuff.

No don't take the pills, they were found to produce cancer. Take some Motrin
for the pain and wear a tight fitting bra (or maybe a couple). Also cabbage
leaves help to dry up the milk. If you can find a binder of some sort, that
would be better. The hospital gave me one when I had my first.

Really? I was under the impression that it (bromicriptine) was no longer
used for lactation supression because it was no more effective than
non-medicine alternatives. Are you thinking of a different med? Which one?

discomfort, any risk of stroke was considered unacceptable.

Hmm, I could be wrong, but I thought they discovered it to cause breast
cancer. I never heard of the stroke association though. Who knows, I just
wouldn't take it for engorgement though.

They were banned for a good reason--they increased
your risk of stroke.
