We are going to fly from Los Angeles to Ft. Lauderdale. 2 days/nights
with family, 1 night with other family, then 3 days 2 nights hotel,
then one more night with family.

In my opinion, we don't need to pack 8 days worth of baby clothes, a
complete set of diapers, etc. We can buy some stuff out there that we
expect to use, including formula and diapers. My wife wants to pack
20 jars/servings of the baby food, 2 cans of the formula powder, 40,
maybe 80 diapers, etc.

My view it depends on who will do the shopping and the washing, and how
easy it will be. Are you willing to go?

Remember you need to have enough stuff to get the hotel stay, and some
clothes will be dirty when you get there.

I think it is reasonable to expect the kid to go through 8 days worth
of clothes (unfamiliar water will be enough to give him/her a tummy
upset). You may need lots more diapers then you plan.

See if you can arrange for the second family to have diapers there
already, and only take 40.

The quantity of baby food sounds excessive.

Fortunately, infant wear is small and packs easily.

And pack for yourself. Last trip, I packed for baby twice and nothing
for me. My sister said "welcome to motherhood". I wore men's clothes the
whole time.

I recently did a cross-country trip in the other direction with
a 10-month-old and I can give you my opinion, worth what you paid
for it!

What we did, since we had family on the other end waiting for us,
was ask them to buy us anything disposable, including food, diapers,
wipes, etc. We only brought enough of these items to take us
through the trip (remember to allow for emergencies, such as
cancelled flights)! This worked fine, thanks to the kindness of
family members who pre-bought for us and even ran out for
extras when we needed them. Other items you may want them to
get might include a thermometer and baby Tylenol in case of
sudden illness, those disposable bibs, anything else cheap.

However, I do think you need to take 8 days worth of baby clothes.
Even if you have a washing machine you can use, do you really want
to spend your vacation doing laundry? Bleah. You also need to
either bring or arrange to have a car seat and someplace for the
baby to sleep if you're not co-sleeping. We also brought a
bunch of toys to entertain Sam on the plane, which I highly
recommend even if you expect the family to have things for him
to play with when you arrive.

I would like suggestions and tips from anyone else tho, who may have
more experience.

The trip will be myself, my wife, mother in law, and 6 month old
daughter. How much do we pack for her? How many burp clothes, how
many diapers, formula, onesies, dresses, etc.

Any suggestions and comments are more than welcome.

Thanks!

I say... who cares just check the bags. Humor your wife.

Oh, make sure there is stuff during the trip and do not assume the trip will
be as planned. Bring a little extra food stuff.

Yeah, but I'm not hauling stuff down from the 16th floor to
go find a laundromat on Michigan Avenue. But if I ever
feel the urge, I'll give you a ring for directions. ;-)

Don't pack baby food or diapers except triple what you expect to use
on the flight or two days worth whichever is more.

Tell the families what you need and have them each buy one box of
diapers and the appropriate formula powder and some specified baby
food. You can reimburse them if that's a problem. That's because it
is a pain to go shopping in a strange place.

Pack sufficient clothes to last a week unless your families don't have
washer access (like if they have high water bills or low water
pressure or they have to use a laundromat. Check to see if the hotel
has a washer too. You can even pack 8 days worth - baby clothes don't
take up much room as someone else pointed out.

Take all the burp clothes you can fit in your luggage, a pretty dress
or cute outfit (especially if given by the family you are visiting)
per day, a onesie per day and depending on how messy a child she is,
maybe 3 or 4 extra ones.

Any suggestions and comments are more than welcome.

Don't forget to allow clothes, food, formula etc for the flight home.

Depending on your baby, you may need more clothes but less of all the
other stuff. Some babies go through two/three clothing changes a day -
others do not. But if you have access to a washing machine/dryer then
you might get away with 8 days worth of clothes. As other posters
pointed out (and you did as well), diapers, baby food, formula can all
be bought in Ft. Lauderdale.

I think you should pack the full amount of clothes that your wife wants, as
you don't want to be stuck without. For the stuff that you can buy, though,
I agree with you. Just bring enough for the first few days.
