Default Heat

Hello.

It's getting hot here (for the UK anyway) and I wondered if anyone had any
ideas for keeping babies cool other than fans etc.

The week after DD was born, in Rhode Island, it was 100F with
horrible east coast humidity. Other than fans, and cool
cloths, and little if any clothing, there's little to be
done. Hydrate. Spend some time in places with a/c, if you
can find them. Even an hour is a great relief!

Have play time in the tub or baby pool with tepid water. Stay in the shade
if outside. Babies don't have to have warm drinks just because they're
babies - water, one juice cup a day won't hurt, something with electrolytes
like a sports drink that's been watered down by half, milk that's not been
warmed. Just a nappie - no clothing.

Lots of baths, and keep the baby well hydrated. If mum is nursing,
keep *her* especially well hydrated too, so that her supply will be
strong.

Good luck with the heat and enjoy the baby!

Check with a pediatrician before using a sports drink. I seem to recall
hearing that they were inappropriate/unsafe for young children. If the
baby is under 4 months, I'd check with the pediatrician before giving
juice too. Babies under 4-6 months should ideally be on only breastmilk.
They don't need juice to stay cool or hydrated. Once you do introduce
juices, try to keep it to only a few ounces per day (diluted with water
if you want).
