Can a baby catch Herpes?
Hi everybody,
I appologize if im in the wrong area in posting this. Im just so worried. Today my sister came over and held my 11 week old baby and touched her herpe outbreak that was on her upper arm. I totally forgot she had it and now im worried that he may get it. Her outbreak is very dried out right now. She tells me that its not contagious when its dry. But ive been reading and I dont see anything that says thats true. Im so scared to tell my fiance. What do you think? Do you think i should be scared? The minute after he touched it i immediately washed his hand with antibacterial soap...but i dont know if this is enough. Do any of you have any information on herpes and how is passed on to another person? |

Can a baby catch Herpes?
Ok, besides reading whats on the internet reguarding herpes I went ahead
and called my babys pediatritian and he informed me that she may not have herpes because its usually on the genitals or the mouth. He said she must have invitigo which looks similar to herpes and is caught by contact. My pediatrician said that as long as the baby didnt have an open wound than its rare he will catch it. But if he shows any signs it will be within 21 days. So i will keep you all posted. Thanks for the help. |

That being said of course - now I wonder, DOES your sister have herpes, or not? I mean, you said she did and of course we took you at your word, but I personally had assumed you knew she had received a proper diagnosis of herpes from a physician. If you know for a fact that your sister has herpes, you should make sure the pediatrician understands that too. I had a friend in college who had recurrent herpes on her distal thigh area (kind of near her knee), it was definitely herpes, she had it cultured and everything. -- hillary israeli vmd http://www.hillary.net "uber vaccae in quattuor partes divisum est." not-so-newly minted veterinarian-at-large |

Personally, I'm wondering about a doctor that's willing to make a diagnosis of a third person based on a second-hand description. Maybe it IS impetigo, but as you've mentioned, it is possible to have herpes (or shingles, which after all is the same virus) on places other than the genitals or mouth. Considering that it's a baby's health at possible risk, after all... tristyn www.tristyn.net |

Considering that it's a baby's health at possible risk, after all... Shingles is a re-activatoin of herpes zoster (I think it is....) otherwise known as "Chicken Pox". Sounds more like the concern is regarding Herpes Simplex types 1 or 2, which commonly appears on either the mouth or the genitals, but can find ways on nerve pathways elsewhere as well. Banty |

What if *you've had the varicella vax but not actually had the disease? If you have never been infected with varicella virus (wild-type or attenuated), you can't have shingles. Shingles occurs 3-4 times less often in vaccinated people than in those who have had wild-type varicella infections. Booster shots with Varivax or with a currently-being-tested-hypothetical-future-Shingles-vaccine may at some point be recommended to prevent shingles in older adults. -- hillary israeli vmd http://www.hillary.net "uber vaccae in quattuor partes divisum est." not-so-newly minted veterinarian-at-large |
