coxsackie virus question
HI all
I have a son at 8 months who seems to have the coxsackie virus. It is all over his daycare. But the ped said it is not classic C as he does have a rash on feet, hands (classic) as well as buttocks, legs, to a lesser degree on the stomach andchest. He also has it in diaper area. They dont bother him, no fever and no blisters in the mouth. Could this be a type of Coxscacki. Thanks |

Thanks have they checked for kawasaki syndrome? much more serious and needs early treatment if it is -- symptoms sound like it and lots of peds have never seen it -- on the other hand if there is an epidemic of coxsackie - that is probably it |

Nancy How could you possibly make that claimed based on the distribution of the rash only, especially given an unlikely epidemiologic scenario for impetigo? PF |

Danny specifically said the child has no fever and no oral lesions. Also, Kawasaki disease does not cause epidemics in daycares. Therefore, one can decidedly say that this child does NOT have Kawasaki disease. Furthermore, one cannot "check" for Kawasaki disease, as it is solely a clinical diagnosis. There is no confirmatory test. Finally, I have never met a pediatrician who has not seen Kawasaki disease, and I know many, many pediatricians. PF |

coxsackie virus question
There was a news feature about this. Coxsackie can be spread by exposure to
fecal matter. Your kids come in contact with fecal matter when they go in kiddie pools. You think the "swim diapers" keep the fecal matter out of the water? They don't! Kids crapping in their diapers are nothing more than little teabags. The pool chemicals ARE NOT strong enough to dissolve fecal matter. Go to this page and scroll down for the following title. http://cbsnewyork.com/topvideos/ July 12, 2004 Dr. David Marks has more on a summer virus affecting kids, Coxsackie Virus. : If coxsackie is what is known locally as "hand foot and mouth disease' : then yeah, it could be coxsackie, but it could also be chicken pox, : the blisters can be similar in some ways, but more fragile and prone : to bursting and scabbing, unlike the rather rugged hand foot and mouth : blisters. Chicken pox is more of a worry to adults than coxsackie : imho... although adults are more likely to get a mild dose of hand : foot and mouth I've never heard of an adult seriously ill with it, : unlikely adult chicken pox which can be damn near life threatening. If : you are at all concerned, then go get a second opinion. The measles looks like what you describe, go where you describe and I remember there being outbreaks like that every now and then in school. -- Patty |

No physician with even one eye would mistake measles for Coxsackie virus. PF |
