CT: New Haven witch hunt for deadbeat fathers - notice that NO mothers were on their list...
Sweep nets 30 deadbeat fathers
Michelle Tuccitto, Register Staff 04/04/2005 http://www.nhregister.com/site/news....81&PAG=461&dep t_id=517515&rfi=6 NEW HAVEN - A weekend sweep of New Haven County netted arrests of 30 deadbeat dads whose child support delinquencies total more than $1 million. The parents allegedly ignored orders to appear in court for unpaid child support. Six fathers were more than $50,000 delinquent, and 17 owe more than $20,000 each, according to the attorney general's office. There were no women charged. Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said officials are trying to send a message to these dads: "Show up in court or you'll be picked up. "Arrests deter delinquency, while providing much-needed resources to children," Blumenthal said. "This will be a more common practice in the future, and sweeps will be done around the state, not just the New Haven area." The men arrested in the sweep were taken to the Whalley Avenue jail. Those who posted bail were released and given court dates, and those who couldn't will appear in Superior Court today. All 30 men are from the New Haven area, according to Blumenthal. Officials did not release the names of those who were arrested. State Marshal Commission Chairman Dennis Kerrigan said about 20 marshals spent their weekend conducting the sweep, from Friday night through Sunday. "Let this serve as a warning," Kerrigan said. "Fulfill your support and court-ordered responsibilities, or risk the same fate as those caught by this weekend's sweep. This is not the first or the last sweep." Diane Fray, director for the child support program of the state Department of Social Services, said these parents need to take steps to be involved in their children's lives. She urged parents who have trouble making payments to contact the department. "We can assist them and modify their support," she said. "A lot of people who don't pay are unemployed or have moved to other states." The department has some remedies to ensure payment, such as through income withholding, she said. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Michelle Tuccitto can be reached at or 789-5615. ---------------------------------------------------- The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Yes, i'm sure 20 Marshalls have better and more important things to do than track down 20 unfortunate men that are probably down on their luck or just plain poverty sticken. Doesn't matter, the Government is broke and all this is for nothing! America had better wake up, you have big problems ahead! |
