Default How does and can one parent effectively these days?

Back in my day in the 1980's Cell Phones, PDA's, GameBoys, Play
Stations, X-boxes, Home PC's, Laptops, and the Internet was almost non
existent in the home. I have to wonder how many more kids are being
diagnosed as an ADD/ADHD client than in my day. And I wonder how kids
can study with all the added distractions of this entertainment driven
generation. Back in my day I read books, played Marbles, ventured into
nature, rode bikes, and did so many things I am afraid many kids no
longer enjoy.

Choose Your Own Adventure was a children's book series of the 1980's
that would never sell in todays market. Instead of wasting countless
hours in front of a computer I read books which I doubt many children
would chose over using a computer these days. Is it good that kids would
rather read on their computers over reading a traditional book?

I fear great danger with this new generation.

back in *my* day in the late 50s/early 60s, parents weren't
so paranoid about "stranger danger"... there *was* no add/adhd
diagnoses, so kids were either very active or not. but kids
were able to engage in a LOT more active outdoor play than
most kids do now.
also, at least up until i was 6 or so, a lot of homes didn't
even own a tv (we did. my dad was an EE.) so the electronic
babysitter was the radio ( & yes, there were folks back then
who whined about kids listening to too much radio & not
playing g)
while there have been studies showing that the 'sound-bite'
form of news & television has affected American's attention
spans, it has not been shown to correlate with add/adhd. in
fact many kids with those problems can hyperfocus on video
games & tv shows...

choose-your-own-adventure books still sell rather well. some
kids like them, some don't. some kids like to read & some
don't. it's *always* been like that, even before the
electronic distractions. there is no difference between
reading information on the computer & reading the same
information from a book... there may be a tad more
disinformation available on the web now, but there are also
books full of disinformation out there too.
there are things a computer can do much better than books...
like making drill & practice (math, spelling, whatever) more
palatable & even fun. i rather enjoy being able to look up
information online rather than wasting gas to go to the
library

I fear great danger with this new generation.

a lot of folks said the same about your generation and about
mine

For what it's worth, my boys adore these. The copies at our local library
are well-worn, indicating that my boys are not the only ones who enjoy
them.
