heating formula
What is the concesus about heating formula in the microwave? I know
microwaves are a no-no for breastmilk, but haven't found clear info about formula. Is it safe? Does it change the flavour/consistency? TIA Marie Chris & Alex--born 04/23/03 at 31wks gestational |

TIA Marie Chris & Alex--born 04/23/03 at 31wks gestational As far as i've been able to determine, the only thing that makes it "unsafe" is that it can leave hot spots because of hte way microwaves heat. f you are always careful to shake well to get rid of such hot spots, I can't imagine why it would be a problem. I always used a microwave, and shook the bottle and tessted the temp before I fed it to the baby. meh -- Children won't care how much you know until they know how much you care |

When my daughter was in the hospital for three months, the microwave is what they used to heat it up. I figured if it was fine for the renowned Children's hospital to use the microwave, it couldn't be all that bad. They just discourage it from the people who don't have half a brain to get rid of the hot spots. ) -- Sue mom to three girls FWIW, I did it with all 3 kids with no problems. Frankly, I've never been able to find any good scientific evidence that heating *breastmilk* in the microwave is unsafe from any *biological* point of view. It doesn't harm the milk in any way that makes it unsafe for drinking. There is some suggestion that the chemical make-up changes slightly, and heating it in the microwave certainly kills any live agents in the milk, but *any* sort of heating does that. Still, all my kids had the occasional microwave-heated bottle of EBM and didn't suffer an ill effects. It can't be a bit trickier to be sure the hot spots are gone, as you're not suppose to shake EBM vigorously, but we never had a problem with swirling and/or inverting the bottle several times. -- Be well, Barbara (Julian [6], Aurora [4], and Vernon's [17mo] mom) See us at http://photos.yahoo.com/guavaln This week's special at the English Language Butcher Shop: "...we patiently sat by his door, waiting for it to open so he could tell us all about who he had met" -- from _Uncle Andy's_ by James Warhola All opinions expressed in this post are well-reasoned and insightful.
