Default a cold, allergies, or just teething?

My son got his first tooth on Oct 10 and was pretty much fine with it.
However, yesterday he started getting now-so-well (I don't want to say sick
since he's not too bad).

He has a runny nose with clear mucous, his eyes are red and watery and he has
little dark circles underneath them, and he had a temperature last night of 102
(via underarm). The dark circles and watery eyes make me think it's allergies.
Hay fever runs in the family and the seasons are changing here. However, the
fever makes me wonder if it's something else.

He's still being his usually charming self, however you can tell he's not
feeling so great. Last night was an adventure. He wanted to sleep in my arms
and when I'd try to put him in his spot he'd get cranky. We got up with him
twice.

He's not tugging at his ears although he has rubbed them a little more than
normal. He usually just plays with his ear when he's nursing. That made me
think maybe it's the beginning of an ear infection. BTW, can I treat an ear
infection with EBM? I know it works on stuffy noses and blocked tear ducts but
can't remember if I've heard anything about the ears.

Of course, I guess it could be just plain old teething. I've read that they
get runny noses and fever with that too. And since he has one tooth, another
could be following. But in reality, I have no idea. He's my first and this is
the first time he's been sick (he's almost 9 months old - hooray for bf'ing!).

Any ideas? When do I start to worry as far as the fever goes?

TIA,

Emma

Izabella right now sorta is going through the same thing. She has 5 teeth
though. She has the same watery eyes and she has a runny nose and just seems
out of sorts. She will not sleep in her crib she wants to be with us in the
bed. She does not seem to be herself. For the last 3 days I have been
giving her medicine to help her out thinking she was sick. And it does not
seem to be working. I gave her cameila (SP?) and its not helping either like
it usually does.
How does breastmilk help with runny noses?
I hope this ends soon with her, we are up all hours in the night and not
getting any sleep. Its hard.

I don't think I would suspect allergies as it seems it is coming out of the
blue. It could be teeth or a cold (which is what I really suspect). Keep him
hydrated and keep a watch on his behavior and if it changes, then perhaps a
call to the doctor would help. As far as the fever, there is no need to
worry unless his behavior changes. He becomes extremely lethargic (not just
extra sleepy because he is not feeling well) and/or the temp goes over 105
degrees or not eating or drinking at all. Remember, it's not how high the
temp is, but how they act with the fever.

My 6 month old is also going thought the exact same thing. I was wondering
if he was allergic to something or just has a cold. His eyes are dark and
puffy too and is having trouble nursing. He is allergic to dairy so that;s
why I thought it could be an allergy.
If he had a 102 fever under arm I would suspect and ear infection. Teething
doesn't usually give a fever that high and in my experience any time any of
my babies had all those symptoms and a fever like that they always had an
ear infection.
This is my 4th baby and I still have to guess with what's going on.
