No - it is superstitious anti-vaccination peasants who are full of ****. Just look at the Amish - as a result of their stupid opposition to the benefeits of modern medicine, 1 in 50 Amish babies was born severely damaged as a result of maternal rubells during pregnancy. http://tinyurl.com/kmbpe 1: Pediatr Infect Dis J. 1995 Jul;14(7):573-8. National Immunization Program, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA 30333, USA. Previous studies of the incidence of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) after rubella outbreaks have been limited because most women with infection during the first trimester elected to have their pregnancies terminated. After a rubella outbreak in 1991 we measured prospectively the impact of maternal infection on CRS among the Amish in one county in Pennsylvania. We compared rubella serology of Amish women delivering before and after the outbreak and cord blood rubella IgM from Amish and non-Amish infants. Before the outbreak 20% of Amish women were susceptible to rubella; after the outbreak 4% were (P = 0.001). Of Amish infants 15% tested positive for rubella IgM; no non-Amish infants did (P 0.001). This rubella outbreak in a largely unimmunized community led to a high rate of CRS. The annual CRS rate among the Amish was 2130/100,000 live births. Health care providers should promote immunization in all clients and intensify efforts among the Amish. PMID: 7567284 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] |

G-d's Justice System When we judge others, we are setting our own personal justice system. If I am constantly finding fault and criticizing others, I send a message to G-d. Shortcomings should be noticed and highlighted; there's no room for mercy and tolerance. And G-d allows us to fashion the very justice system with which He views us. If we see only the bad in others, we bring upon ourselves the very judgment we, in our minds, visit upon others daily. http://www.yeshiva.org.il/midrash/shiur.asp?id=338 In the next portion of the midrash, the sages teach that it is fitting for people to speak in clean, appropriate language:" The words of Hashem are pure'...In the Torah, God chose to write eight extra words in order to avoid using terminology which was not 100% 'clean. In the Book of Berei****, for instance, Noach is told to choose for the ark from among 'the pure cattle and from the cattle that is not pure...' [- instead of referring to the latter group using the Hebrew term for ritually impure beasts, "Tameh." ] In disqualifying the rabbit as a pure animal, the Torah does not say that the impurity derives from the fact that the rabbit does not have split hooves, [though this is true] but rather that the rabbit is impure because it [only] chews its cud. (Vaykira 11)" The clear message of the midrash: when unpleasant things are uttered, they must be expressed in the cleanest, most honorable manner possible. When we talk about being careful about speech, we're talking about two different issues. What to say, and how to say it. First of all, it is important not to say things that need not be said. When something is in need of being said, it should be expressed using clean, appropriate language. I've mentioned on several occasions that Rav Tzvi Yehuda Kook (of blessed memory) was very cautious with his words, always carefully weighing what he had to say before he said it. He would never say things in the negative, but would always couch his ideas in positive terms. So, assuming un-vaccinated children never suffer autism (which is false, of course) please explain how suffering 1 in 50 babies to be born damaged by Rubella is a sensible risk to take to avoid a 1 in 250 chance of developing autism? This is the irrationality of the anti-vaccination kooks on display - there are risks with vaccinations - very small risks, so small it is almost impossible to quantify them. The *benefits* of vaccination, however, as we can see from comparing vaccinated populations with the Amish, are huge. 1 in 50 is terrible odds, and that is only one of the many diseases which children are protected from by vaccinations. Meanwhile, back in the real world, these Danes *did* do the research, and they found the autism rate was the same in vaccinated or un-vaccinated children: Kreesten Meldgaard Madsen, et al. "A Population-Based Study of Measles, Mumps, and Rubella Vaccination and Autism" NEJM 2002;347:1477-1482 Unlike Andrew Wakefield (whose "research" was based on the faked results of tests on a sum total of 12 children), these proper scientists studies 500,000 children to obtain their results. Unlike Andrew Wakefield, the Danish study has *not* been shown to be fraudulent. SO *real*, *honest* researchers have shown that autism and vaccination arre not linked, in the slightest. WHo shall we believe? |
