Default Is it thrush? Three year old nursing

Help - itching and pain. My three year old nurses once or twice a day.
We co-sleep and he will nurse a little when he goes to sleep and once
or twice if he wakes during the night. I know I'm still producing milk
but for the most part I pretty much feel the whole nursing thing, milk
production thing is over. My breasts are back to "normal" and never
feel full. However, I have noticed mild itching off and on. It occurs
on both sides. More recently, I've noticed shooting pain on one side.
It starts in the nipple and radiates into the breast. It pulses over
and over but only lasts about five minutes and NOT during nursing.
I've noticed it during the day when I'm not even around my child. The
pain and itching are both sporadic. I've also noticed in the recent
past that latching on can be very painful but then this problem goes
away. (I was thinking the latching pain could be related to my cycle
and sensitive breasts during certain points.). Anyway, does anyone
have any comments on whether this itching and shooting pain could be
thrush. I had thrush when DS was only a few weeks old and it HURT.
This is just a mild annoyance. If it is thrush, would my son have white
spots in his mouth? What should I look for in his mouth? I'm a little
freaked out because our local media has done some recent stories on
rare breast cancer that starts as itching and pain and this seems
similar. I have an annual exam next month so I'll be taking these
concerns to the doctor but I thought I'd check with the list too.
Thank you!
