Default OT religion and smacking

On the train yesterday I was talking to a woman who was keen to tell
me that children need to be disciplined from an early age. I did all
the neutral 'oh really, well that's not how I want to do it but thanks
anyway' stuff but then she told me that she had read about it in a
book her pastor had lent her. It said that you should smack but not
with the hand as that is for love, but with a paddle. She was reading
it because it was the book that the christian school she wanted to
send her child to used as a guideline. She said that she wanted to
know that she had done the best she could for her child when judgement
day came. I said that if I believed in a judgement day I would expect
to go straight to hell, do not pass go, if I ever smacked my child,
especially with a paddle. She said she would pray for me.

It left me so upset, her poor child. She said the governbment are
trying to ban it, I said I wasnt surprised and asked how a school
could discipline children like that without breaking the law. She said
it was ok as they parents had given consent.

Yuck.

I called the NSPCC who said that there was nothing that can be done as
she didnt know what the book was called and I couldnt remember what
church she went to. They thought she may have mental health problems,
she had 3 kids with her so that is so worrying.

All this in 21st century England

yuck.

When I am confronted with people like this, I like to
ask them to cite one verse in the Bible that recommends
use of a paddle OR a hand to spank a child. They
usually cite the verse about sparing the rod, which is
exactly what I am looking for because it gives me a
chance to suggest they look into the use of a rod -
more for guidance than punishment.

I am not opposed to spanking, and I believe some
children respond appropriately to that means of
correction, but others do not, and it takes a lot of
wisdom to know the difference. Every child needs a
different kind of discipline.

In Denmark this has been illegal the last seven years. Not even parents are
allowed to smack - neither with hand or with anything else. A child can
report it to the police if he is slapped.

It takes time for some people to get used to, but they mean it!! (the
legislation)

That's just so upsetting. I think I would have had to give that woman a
LARGE talking to, although I probably would have done just what you did and
kicked myself for the following days/weeks.

I believe that here in the US, if you sign something agreeing to let the
school discipline your child, they are allowed to do so as long as they
don't leave any visible marks on the child. I may have just fabricated that
in my mind from watching too many television shows, but that's what sticks
in my mind.

In any case, if ANYONE lays a FINGER on my child, they are going to have to
respond to one mad as hell momma with flying fists!

To my knowledge (at least here in Michigan) the public school system may not
physically punish your child (i.e. spank). In the 6 years my kids have been
in school, I've never signed anything regarding disipline. They would be
under huge scrutiny if they did and probably fired. It's been a law for
quite some time now. Private schools may differ on this policy. And also,
I've never even seen any TV where they spank children in school unless it
was an extremely old show.

Out of idle curiosity, what is the penalty for violating this law?

Poor kids. I hope they'll be able to afford a psychologist when they
grow up. (Sincerely -- not meant as a snarky comment on the mother but
a real hope for the kids.)

There are states where public school officials can legally spank your
child without your permission.

Better make sure you don't live in one of those states, then - no point
in you ending up in jail as well as your child being spanked.

I'm not sure it has ever been used - it's very diffucult to prove if there
is not marks. If there are marks it's a different law.

It's there mostly as a signal - to teach the parents that smacking is not a
valid way of teaching children anything.

Wow Clisby, I am amazed. I didn't think any states in the US could spank so
I looked it up. Sure enough, 23 states are allowed to spank kids in public
schools. ( It said it was mostly in the south in the "bible belt"
states. Geez, that's a shame.
