ARE U HAVING ANY TIPS TO INCREASE MILK FOR BREASTFEEDING. It will be easier to read if you type in lower case letters, like this. Why does your wife think your son is not getting enough milk? We're going to need more information, like how often he's feeding, for how long, how many wet nappies he has in a day, whether she's supplementing with formula, taking any medications, whether your midwife or lactation consultant has checked his latch, whether he has any other health problems aside from or in relation to being premature, whether he was breastfed while in the incubator and if not whether your wife expressed her milk during that time if not. It's a bit hard to determine from that what the problem is, or even if there is one at all. A lot of mothers doubt their supply unnecessarily and begin supplementing, which is one of the biggest causes of breastfeeding failure. -- Amy Mum to Carlos born sleeping 20/11/02, & Ana born screaming 30/06/04 http://www.freewebs.com/carlos2002/ http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/a/ana%5Fj%5F2004/ My blog: http://spaces.msn.com/members/querer-hijo-querer-hija/ |

We need a LOT more information before we can help you. And I agree with her about your post being easier to read if you used both upper and lower case letters. In addition to her questions, I would also ask if she is eating or taking anything to increase her supply. Please reply ASAP, and we will give your some recommendations based on our specific situation. And one last point. If you are not supplementing now, don't start! And if you are supplementing, don't increase the amount, but start to gradually DECREASE the amount. This is the single most damanging thing your wife can do for her supply. Finally, she should allow as much confort sucking as possbile. This will stimulate her supply.\\ Larry |

A few questions from a mom who also had a baby delivered about that point.
1) WHY was your son delivered early? My daughter was born at the beginning of week 35 due to Preeclampsia and pre-term labor, and it took a LONG time for my milk to come in at all, and a very long time (about 7 weeks), before I got engorged and started producing liters a day. Apparently this isn't all that atypical in pre-eclampsia where you have a ton of fluid retention, especially not with a preemie. 2) Did the NICU have a special needs lactation consultant on staff to help you get started, or can you get a referral to one? I went through two LCs before getting referred to a special needs LC, and that made all the difference in getting my daughter onto pure breast milk. It is entirely possible, with a preemie, that any nursing issues are not supply side, but demand side, which was the case with my 35 weeker. 3) How and what was he fed in NICU, and how and what has he been fed since he's been home?
