Default Flu- I *told* you!!//my Thanksgiving travels

Not not me thank goodness.

But in a post earlier I was really complaining angrily about how my inlaws
insisted that no one was sick, and pressured me to be around the kids, with
the flu going around down there. We went (sort of unwillingly on my part
because I am SO not wanting to catch sick), and my nephew was absolutely
drooling in snot bless his heart, and was coughing etc. It turns out he had
been sick but no one "remembered" it when we asked befprehand so we could
avoid it. That was right at the end of Nov, first of December.

Well, my nephew now has the flu and was taken to the ER, We think he's
ok...his parents aren't too worried about it but I actually am, what with
the bad strain that's going around and the publicity of kids' deaths this
years. I know the flu comes on fast, I do not know the incubation period so
I don't know if he could have contracted it already when we were there and
carried it vefore it became active- all I know is the flu is going around
and is pretty bad where they are, in the schools and daycares. When we were
there, newspapers reported 40% absenteeism in the schools at one time with
the flu..so this may not be relevant to what I was complaining about at that
time- I once got the flu after unknowingly eating after my dad, who had been
better (?) for a couple of weeks, which could have been coincidence
also....etc etc etc

We are pretty sure that now my MIL and FIL and also nephew's parents are
going to be sick around Christmas. (When I was there, he was sneezing and
not covering his mouth, and also his nose was running severely etc). I told
my husband to tell them that I am NOT coming for Christmas. No way, no how.
With the flu actualy in their house, they still want me to come!! I don't
care who gets mad, I am not going.

I guess I will spending the holidays alone and my husbadn has said he is
staying with me (his parents still want him to come)...so I guess I'm a
villain this year for being so rude as to think my nephew is contagious and
also for being the cause of my husband not going down there-- hey, he can
go...I'm not!

Kids are contagious for a day before developing symptoms,
and a week or two after developing symptoms. (Adults are a
day before to a week after.) Incubation period is 1-3 days.
If you were exposed on December 1st, you'd have gotten
sick well before now.

Well let's hope he doesn't bring the flu home to you.

Whatever you decide, have a joyous day!

I'm doing what I have done just about every year for a while....going to the
Valley Rescue Mission to help out. Afterwards, I'll go to visit a few
people at their homes to say Happy Holiday.

This is the last year I'll be able to do that for some time. When the girl
is old enough, we may do it together!

I hope my flu shot kicks in so I don't pick up anything!

Oh lord. My reaction to flu is relatively laid back most of the time, but
we're going to visit the in laws who are less than "vigorous" and when I got
lightheaded and dizzy and my eyeballs started hurting on Monday, I went and
got a screen *that day*, with the plan of going on antivirals to avoid
giving them the flu. Luckily it's *not* the flu and I'm already feeling
somewhat better, but I'd rather be more aggressive than normal treating flu
than drag it to people who don't want to be sick.

Does anyone know if you are allowed to take prescription anti-virals while
pregnant, such as Tamiflu? I would find out if I got the flu, because I'd go
to my dr asap.

I can tell you that if you do get the flu- and your doctor takes a throat
swab and you test positive for the actual flu, that Tamiflu etc, if taken
within 48 hours of onset of symptoms, really does work within 2 days to make
you feel so much better. I was amazed- it makes that bad flu feeling go
away, the achiness and exhaustion so much better. But it makes me throw up-
I think Zofran would counteract that.

If I get the flu I am going to the dr immeidately and hope I can take
Tamiflu. If not....urgh.

But, I feel fine so far. And I hope now the flu shot has kicked in. I had it
December 6.

One of the antivirals is decidedly risky in the early trimesters. Antivirals
as a class theoretically *should* be riskier than antibiotics, because in
order to mess with a virus you've got to mess with more fundamental things
than most antibiotics. Hypothetically. But I really don't know about
Tamiflu. Amatadine is not recommended, I don't think. But I do think they
give acyclovir to pg women in the later trimesters and I know they give AIDS
drugs, but there, it's a "benefit outweighs probable risk" recommendation.
