Hi -

I have a friend who does the following with his child, and he claims
to have read all the Parenting magazines and literally calls himself
an "expert" on raising kids (he has one, that is 2 yrs old so far).
He disagrees with me that these things are detrimental to his child's
physical and mental health. He says its very common to do these
things as a parent. Naturally I disagree. I wanted to get everyones
opinion on what YOU think about the commonality of these things, as
well as the safety of them.

1. Allows 1 1/2 yr old to drink sips of their margarita, beer, etc.
Thinks its funny/entertaining. Did it in public in front of several
other people.

2. Allows child to finish off their coffee for them. Again, a 1 and
a half year old.

3. Puts child out in Arizona midday sun for 1 to 2 hours per day.
Child constantly has a "Tan".

4. Refused to get any immunizations for the child whatsoever.

5. Allows child to stay up to midnight nearly every night, very often
extending to 2 or 3am, and sleeps in till noon.

6. Child is allowed to watch "The Hulk" movie. Now child stands in
front of television with literal horror on his face, making viscious
angry facial expressions and growling while squatting. Child is now
hitting other kids, and walks around with Hulk blowup doll smashing
everything. Parents think its "Funny" and harmless.

7. Bring child into smoke filled casino in Las Vegas at 4am, still
awake. Casino owners repeatedly reprimanding parents for bringing
child into casino area. They think casino owners are "dumb".

8. Puts child into pool fully clothed, doesnt bother to get him out
of his day clothes first. After swimming, hands soggy fully clothed
child to grandma to take care of.

I am good friends with these people, but I have major issues with the
things they're doing. Naturally I run the risk of the whole "Don't
tell us how to raise our child!" thing, but to me, these are not only
crazy, they're dangerous to the childs physical and mental health.

My only reason in posting is to get the opinion of as many other
parents as possible, so that maybe my friend will acknowledge that he
is wrong.

What say Ye?

For the most part they are not the choices I would make but
I don't think any of them rise to the standard of child
endangerment. I do find it hard to believe that he is
finding support for these things is parenting magazines.

I think that if you express your concerns that he will say
exactly what you predict above. I doubt it will help the
child and will probably strain the friendship.

I wonder with these choices whether the friendship is worth it.

I pretty much agree with CBI, although I would argue that bringing the kid
into a smoke-filled room at 4 am and letting the kid in the sun is rather
irresponible, at best.

Your friend won't acknowledge that he is wrong. If he is finding
agreement with those things in Parenting magazines, it's all the more
reason to not read them.

I don't think staying up late is a problem for the child, as long as
he has enough other opportunities to sleep. when he goes to school or
starts a job, whichever is first, the child will adapt to the schedule
the rest of the world keeps. the rest, well, he won't listen.
Hopefully the child will have many other influences on his life that
help ameliorate the "interesting" things his dad does. Hopefully.

although I don't think any of it is abusive, it sounds to me like your
friend is trying to raise the world's littlest redneck.
