Default OT-unhappy baby when being babysat

(Try saying that subject header 5 times fast

I'm a SAHM and to top that off I'm single. Needless to say DS (5 months) is
very attached to mommy and hasn't had anyone else care for him regularly. I'm
concerned because eventually I will have to return to school/work, although I'd
like to try and postpone this until he is a year old. Occasionally I do need to
get out without the baby now, and Grandma is more than willing to babysit.
However, whenever I leave DS he cries and cries and cries. I know its normal to
expect this, but how can I make this more enjoyable for him, and Grandma! She
said that last time she babysat (for 2 hrs) he cried about 1 and a half hours.
We live in the same house so he sees her every day. When I return home after
Grandma babysits DS is so HAPPY to see me,, he is smiles from ear to ear and so
talkative.

Advice?

It's hard having a baby like that when you want/need to be away. We left my
third daughter 3-4 times (she is 15 months old), and she cried every time
the whole time. Literally! Some babies just want to stay with their mommies,
I don't think it has anything to do with being spoiled, it's just how they
are. My daughter is fine with my dh, it's just everyone else she freaks out
with. How often does your mother keep her alone? Do you think your daughter
is used to her?

No real advice. Just wanted to say that I had a similar experience - as
Grandma. When my niece was about 6 months old, my sister and BIL wanted
to go out to dinner, so I volunteered to babysit. Baby smiles as they
leave and then proceeds to bawl her eyes out for the next 2-2 1/2 hours,
I sang, I walked, I even put her in the stroller and walked around the
house. Nothing. I just sang loudly at that point to drown out the
crying. Finally my sister and BIL come home. The baby sees them,
*LAUGHS* , and reaches put to them. Looks back at me and laughs again.

What I learned from this experience is that babies have a wicked sense
of humor.

DS is very familiar with Grandma. As I said we three live in the same house.
Although, Grandma doesn't really do much with DS when I am home, I suppose we
need to work on that, maybe he then would be better when I wasn't home.
Anyhow, it is at least comforting to know that other babies are this way.
