Well gosh... I guess I'd better not be left alone. I haven't the faintest idea
of how to turn off the main water line in our house!

Well you probably should - along with knowing where the fuse box or
circuit breaker box is (and having the circuits labeled), where the
gas cut-off (if any) is, how to drain the hot water heater and turn
it off, how to call 911, and where the fire extinguishers are and how
and when to use them (and when not to).

In our current house, it is out back in a hole in the ground. In our
former city house, the cutoff valve was out in the street, but I (and
probably you too) could have cut off the water to any individual
appliance (like the washer) or sink.

better find out -- it is a rare household that NEVER has a broken pipe,
overflowing toilet or broken washer line at least once in a decade or so

we discovered that the only shut off in our home was at the meter in a
hole in the front yard one Christmas morning as a broken pipe flooded
our kitchen -- not the best time for creative problem solving

I just assumed that the shut off would be in the garage -- never occured
to me that there wouldn't be one at all in the house.

In my current house there is a shut off just inside the house coming from the
well, and one day I did really need to shut it off because of a burst frozen
pipe. (Weird thing - my house wasn't flooding - it was flowing into the
basement foundation blocks where it was picked up by the basement waterproofing
system - what I had was the well pump dutifully pumping water from my well to
the sump pump to pump outside, so I was filling up my backyard!)

Should we shot drunk drivers too? They actually KILL people ... even
kids!

Yes. I always wonder why killing someone with a gun is murder and
gets you life in prison, while killing someone with a car gets you
"community service" and no prison time at all.

It may not be, in terms of penalty; but it may depend upon why you have
the gun and what you were doing at the time. Killling someone with a
gun, even if by accident, if you were committing a crime is a more
serious crime than killing someone with a gun by accident while you are
hunting. Killing someone with a car while driving drunk is generally
considered a more serious crime than killing someone with a car because
you were careless.

Manslaughter, like murder, comes in varying degrees, whether by car or
by gun or by any other means.

Here, the law is age 12-there is still a limit as to how long a young teen
can be left alone, or in supervision of other children. And it really
depends on the child. I have known 7 yr olds I would trust much farther than
some 15 yr olds! So at 12, some children might be very ready, and some might
not be ready at all.

Wyoming law is no child left unsupervised until age ten, and kids
can't babysit until twelve, but the law states something along the
lines of a reasonably responsible child doing the sitting. You can't
leave a kid with a 15 year old known to set things on fire, for an
extreme example, just because he's fifteen. You'd still be on the
legal hook.
