Default OT - Getting out of Jury Duty

Is it possible? Any good tips how? I got a questionnaire which basically
qualified me with a note saying something along the lines of "you will be
summoned within the next year" My husband works 40 miles away, I have no
childcare (all family lives hours away) and all my usual baby sitters either
work or are in school all day. Oh, and Im still nursing Xander. Right on the
questionnaire it said that needing childcare, transportation or work reasons
did not qualify to reject you. What crap!!!

I really really don't want to serve but if I get summoned, I will do
whatever I can to NOT serve. Please no reponses how it's my duty as a US
citizen, heh, I've wanted to leave this country for years now (can't
convince dh)

Thanks,

Kari

Depends on where you live. I believe under Georgia USA law, you will be
excused if you are the caregiving parent of a child under -- 5? 6? It is
statutory, and I can't remember the exact requirements.

I live in NY state. After talking with a few people today, they said it was
fairly easy to get out of it just by saying you'd rather not do it. My
problem is having to find care for the baby and after school care for the
other 2. In a different situation, I don't think I'd be as adamant about
serving but with nursing a baby and not having child care readily available
to me, it just plain sucks.

Thanks,

Kari

Let them think you're crazy. I wrote a note for DH, depressed at the time,
telling them how his concentration span and rational thought was impaired -
all true - and they let him off no questions asked. I said we could provide
a Dr's cert if necessary, but they never asked for it. This is in New
Zealand though.

That would totally work for me because I have a few mental issues anyway.
Boy that sounded bad, lol. I could easily get a dr's excuse, I hate public
places and have panic attacks when Im alone in a strange environment. That
is a big concern for me, second to having to find care for my kids.

Thanks

Here in Oz, I've gotten out of it by writing a letter stating that a) I was
the mother of a young child and could not find adequate childcare and that I
had given up my highly paid job in order to care for my child; b) I was
breastfeeding the child at the time and planned on continuing for the
foreseeable future and c) I did not believe in the jury system as "a clever
barrister can make a layman believe that the guilty are innocent and vice
versa". (Item "c" is generally regarded as a good enough reason to be
excused all on its own in these parts).

My jury duty form (I serve Oct. 29th) says that bf means no jury duty,
period.

Call them. Explain your situation. Ask if there are deferral options (i.e.
can you defer for a year) or an option to schedule your start of service.

Here, we have a one-day/one-trial rule. It's very hard to get out of jury
duy here unless you are over 70 or breastfeeding, but it's very easy to
defer it.

I was actually pleased to get called right now, as I have no great childcare
issues, am not working, and don't mind anything where I can be sitting down.

I hated jury duty at 27 weeks last time, just sitting there waiting for my
one day or one trial, watching my legs swell from lack of activity! (Yes I
tried to pace, but didn't want to seem too psycho.)

I was SO LUCKY they randomly released me halfway through the day when they
figured out they would only have to seat one more jury that day tops.

As luck would have it, I was reading a link about this the other day
(specifically about the b'feeding issue, not so much the childcare
issue, but you might find it helpful). See
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/normal/jury-duty.html.

All the best,

Sarah

I've talked to a few people that have said it varies state to state but
nursing would be grounds for deferrment. I've also heard that just being a
primary caregiver is enough. And on my anxiety groups, they said that was
enough of a reason to get out of it permanently (I am prone to panic attacks
if Im in a large group of people in an unfamiliar setting)

I dont think I'd mind it so much, in a different scenario. It may be
interesting but at this time in my life, it's nothing Im interested in
doing,
