Foster mom acused of homicide by abuse
Posted: 9:10 PM, Aug. 27, 2006 By Tricia Manning-Smith, KING 5 News SEABECK, Wash. - A foster mom is in jail on $1 million bail, accused of homicide by abuse. Her husband confirms that she is under arrest for circumstances surrounding the death of an adopted son. The woman is known for caring for children, hers and others. KING 5 News has learned that she recently returned from Africa where her family is involved in orphan care. Shortly after she arrived home in Washington, she was arrested. Former neighbors knew the 44-year old woman as polite and helpful. "They had apparently 11 foster kids over there plus three of their own, and we barely heard them," said Danita Hughes. "They lived a very simple life. They raised their fruit and vegetables on their property, they had cows, goats, got their milk that way, pretty much lived off the land." But something terrible happened one night about four years ago. One of the young boys was somehow injured. "My husband went over to try to help. She believed in no medical help. It was just home remedy type stuff," said Hughes. The boy later reportedly died. Then, years later, according to the woman's blog on a Web site, the family sold their Port Orchard home and moved to a house in Africa. Internet photos show them with women and children. But on a recent blog entry, the woman wrote that she had to come back to the States for medical treatment for an infection. It was when she had returned to Port Orchard, that officers apparently made the arrest. On the phone Sunday from Africa, her husband confirmed that the arrest is connected to the death years ago of their adopted son.
