Baby spits up blood after breast feeding
Hello,
Yesterday my baby spat up some blood shortly after breastfeeding. I immediately told my husband and we called the doctor. The baby seams fine and the doctor told us that it could be related to cracked nipples. Mine are cracked and sore. If the baby spits up after bottle feeding, there is no blood. Tonight the baby is spitting up blood again after breastfeeding and we called the doctor again and will be bringing the baby to the doctor first thing in the morning. I can't help but feel terribly frightened by this experience. The baby is now 3 months old and looks and acts like a healthy 3 month old should. Has anyone had similar experiences? Lek, mother of 3 month old Davelyn. |

Baby spits up blood after breast feeding
This happened to me. It is most likely your blood. Blood is an
irritant, so it makes baby spit up. You might want to consult with your GYN to get some treatment for your nipples. Maybe a lactation consultant (like the other poster said) could help you with latching on. If it's not the latch, it might be thrush. In my case, it was thrush. Don't freak out. This is very common. When it happened to me, I went to the emergency room and the doctor told me that he sees these cases a lot. Erin Lek wrote: Hello, Yesterday my baby spat up some blood shortly after breastfeeding. This happened to by MIL when she was nursing DH. He's now a healthy and happy (and weaned! haha) 30-year old. See if you can get a lactation consultant in, and lather on the nipple cream. Hope it gets better *soon* -- cracked nipples are the worst. Em mama to Micah, 11/14/04 |

Baby spits up blood after breast feeding
There are nutrients that are good for the skin, such as lecithin (in apples, for example, if I remember right) and omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids, and vitamins C and E. It seems likely that increasing these nutrients in the diet can help heal cracked nipples. Many people have diets deficient in omega-3, which is found in walnuts, pecans, flax seeds and flax seed oil, and to a lesser extent in soybeans or soybean oil and wheat germ. Udo Erasmus, an expert on essential fatty acids, says that cracks in the skin of the feet that many people get in the winter can be avoided by adding plenty of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids to the diet. I suppose cracked nipples are similar. His website is http://www.udoerasmus.com The essential fatty acids are also good for baby's brain development. |

I can imagine how unsettling this is, but don't be frightened. It sounds like it's blood from your nipples that is irritating your baby's stomach. If you swallowed blood (like when you have a bloody nose), you might throw up, too. But it's not going to hurt your baby. What you need to do is get some help with your baby's latch. Your nipples should not be cracked and bleeding, especially not 3 months out. Maybe some of the videos on this page will help you see how to get a good latch: http://www.breastfeeding.com/helpme/helpme_video.html Don't make this into a reason to stop breastfeeding. You can get through this. -Patty, mom of 1+2 |
