I-Team: Yvonne Gates' Grandchild in Child Endangerment Investigation

A child endangerment investigation involving the grandchild of a former
county commissioner is being taken out of the hands of local
authorities. County officials say they want to avoid any appearance of
impropriety as criminal charges move forward against the son of former
commissioner Yvonne Gates.

Law enforcement sources say they were stunned to learn that the child
endangerment case against Yvonne Gates' son and daughter-in-law might be
processed by someone who has been friendly with Ms. Gates in the past.

But when the district attorney's office complained to Child Protective
Services, they were told --at first -- to butt out. Not anymore.

Brian Atkinson Turner, the son of former commissioner Gates and stepson
of current district judge Lee Gates was arrested last week on drug and
child endangerment charges. His wife Kathryn O'Gara was also taken into
custody.

Inside their home, police found marijuana, along with a pot growing
operation, and filthy conditions including garbage strewn on the floor,
a lack of food, and feces wiped on the walls.

According to law enforcement sources, Turner bragged to police during
his arrest that the charges would never stick because his parents would
get him out of it.

This week, as the child endangerment count made its way to Child
Protective Services, the caseworker assigned to the case was found to
have ties to Yvonne Gates. The D.A.'s office asked that she be removed.

CPS said no.

That's when the I-Team got involved and asked the county manager about it.

Thursday, manager Virginia Valentine said she decided to move the case
outside the county and allow an investigator from Reno to handle it.
Valentine said this is not a knock on CPS, rather an attempt to avoid
any hint of impropriety since Ms. Gates not only has several friends in
that office, but it's also where her former executive assistant works.

CPS says the case worker is not a close friend of the Gates family and
only knows Gates from a couple of fundraising events. CPS also says
there was no formal request by the D.A.'s to recuse the case worker.

Law enforcement sources say otherwise. They tell the I-Team it looked
like the case worker was about to end the investigation for lack of
evidence. Now, however, the matter will move forward with an outside
investigator, someone who does not know either the ex commissioner or
her husband, the judge.
