Lump on back of infant's neck
My 3 mo DS has this hard lump towards the bottom of his neck, right side.
It kind of feels like those fatty deposits dogs get (our 1 dog has several of them so I know what they feel like). DH feels it's caused from DS always having his head turned to the right when he sleeps and feeds. He thinks maybe it's the muscle all knotted up. Any thoughts? |

Maybe a lymph node is inflamed? DS's lymph node gets inflamed when he gets an infection. Of course, one time I had an inflamed lymph node, the doctor said something, I didn't catch it all; but I did catch the part where she said blah-blah-blah was okay otherwise they'd have to rule out cancer. What a thought. Anyway, it did turn out okay. |

Can he lift his head up straight at all? If not, it could be muscles. You might want to ask your ped about infant toriticollis next time you see him/her. I thought Ben had it. You can gently work with him to get his head to tilt the other direction sometimes too. It might also just be the shape of his head. Brock looked like he has muscle knots but now that he is a little older you can tell it is just the shape. -- Nikki, mama to Hunter 4/99 Luke 4/01 Brock 4/06 Ben 4/06 |

If your son always has his head in one postition, you need to correct that, and make sure he is held and sleeps in many postitons. Otherwise he could develop positional plagiocephaly: http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/gro...iocephaly.html Our son had it when we adopted him, as the foster care Mom always laid him on his right side for the first month of his life. It can be hard to correct. My son still has a bit of assemetry to his head. Look at the top of your baby's head/skull and see if the skull is assemetric at all. If not, you have caught it in time. My son also had a small lump at the back of his neck on the right side. I don't know if this was a lymph node as the doctor suspected or because of the positional plagiocephaly. It eventually went away. Good luck to you! -L. |

Ds has a haematoma on the bottom right side of his neck. At first two doctors diagnosed a cyst, but a scan showed it was a lump of bruised muscle that was possibly caused by the use of a ventouse. It didn't appear for a good 6 weeks after birth so by the time we noticed it it was already causing him to sleep with his head the other way. We did ask about this before we discovered the lump but were told some babies favoured one side and not to worry. Of course we now know different but by the time it was discovered it was too late. This lump also caused his head to tilt to one side (torticollis) but exercises and making him turn has mostly sorted hit out. The lump is still there and he is now 15 mnths on, so it may need to be sorted? I would deffo get it checked out. In Ds's case it was too late to prevent the flat head and we certainly didn't intend on cramming is head in a glorified helmet for 23 hrs a day for 3 months, so he will always be slightly at odds. From the fron he looks fine but from the side of back you can see the flat side and his ears do not match up. This is his flat side, so actually it doesn't look too bad. http://wwwibbles.co.uk/pics/main.php...&g2_itemId=314 This might be interesting: http://www.torticolliskids.org/faq's.htm |
