SEATTLE - How bad are things at DSHS?

Bad enough for officials with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department to
tell me that the agency is no where near doing what it should to protect
children.

That candid assessment comes after yet another incident in which DSHS
ignored reports that a child was being tortured by his step-grandmother.

According to the sheriffs, the woman would slice the boy's legs with a
fork and then pour vinegar on the wounds.

They also say that the boy was choked to the point of blacking out and
that he had the bottoms of his feet whipped with bamboo.

Six times over the past 3 years, school officials and neighbors called
DSHS about suspected abuse, but it wasn't until Pierce County Sheriff's
took a report that the woman was finally arrested last week.

Even then, DSHS returned the boy to the grandmother's house because the
agency had a 'safety plan'.

Well that plan failed since the child was locked in his room until he
was finally taken away and placed in a receiving home.

Look, DSHS needs to be grabbed by its bureaucratic short hairs and
dragged to accountability.

No more dead and tortured and abused kids.

No more DSHS excuses and cover-ups.

No more complacency from the governor.

I've got my ideas.
