Default Need cheap kid activity

Hello everyone -

I still haven't gotten my tax return. I promised something fun for
the kids next weekend, but I'm flat broke. Any ideas? Cheap AND fun?

Cheap and fun ... well, where (approximately) do you live and how old
are your kids? I live in the DC area. With my 7 and 9 year old, I'd
take them either to the National Zoo or to one of the museums they like
on the Mall. These things are all free. If I were in NYC I'd take them
to the Metropolitan Museum, where *you* choose how much to donate for
admission. (You don't actually have to pay the suggested donation, and
no one bats an eye.) Elsewhere I might find a playground we don't often
get to, one with unusual play equipment perhaps, or go hiking in an
interesting nature area. If you live by the coast, the beach can
actually be fun. Don't plan on swimming; plan on sandcastles and bring
snacks along. Let the kids roll up their sweatpants and play tag with
the waves.

If they're young enough, take them thru the automatic car wash, ham it
up beforehand and during.-Jitney

This saturday, I'm taking my two sons to a comic book store here in San
Francisco. It's Free Comic Book Day - something fun for them, and
(hopefully) a pretty good lesson about being on a budget.

I think there is a store locater on their website. What city do you
live in Yvonne?

Things we do on the weekends: Go swimming, go to the pet stores to
look at all the animals, take DD to the toddler park to go on the
slides, take her to the nature park to walk through the gardens and
feed the ducks, go to our fluvarium to look at water animals. Of
course, at 18 months everything is fun.

Mine are now 4 and 6 and they like to do the same types of things. It is
made an 'event' rather then a run of the mill day by packing fun picnic
lunches etc. We have a park with grills so we can roast marshmallows. We
look for various things on our nature walks now that they are older, talk
about some of the different things. They feel good knowing stuff :-) We
went on a long hike to find the perfect branch for our Easter Tree then
threw rocks in the river. That's a perfect day for my age set.

I plan to do some tours and take in some of the smaller local attractions
that we've never been too (a couple small museums etc.) and the like this
summer as they are old enough to be interested in that type of thing. We'll
be doing the free tour of the dam and see how the electricity is made. That
will be a hit!

2 year old DS loves to get on trains. We drive to the train station
nearby, they have free car parking and then we get on the train and go
to childrens discovery museum. It is double bonus for my son. It has
become a weekend ritual for us now.
You could take a local train and make a picnic to a park or zoo.
