Default sick baby and plugged ducts

How many of you in the last couple of weeks that have gotten plugged ducts
have also had sick babies? I seem to be remembering about 4 or 5 people that
have said their kids have bad colds or the flu and then another 3 or 4
mentioning plugged ducts. I'm wondering if this little *epidemic* of ours is
related or if I'm imagining things.
Reason I am asking is for the last 2 days I have had a REALLY sore spot on
the left side which I suspect is a plugged duct. Nicolas isn't able to nurse
as *vigorously* as he usually does so of course since he is taking less out
I get stopped up. It's painful enough that I can't stand to be touched
without almost yelping. I'm trying to get him to nurse that side the most,
but his nose is stuffy so as soon as he needs a breth he pops off...and
switches sides. He is also in the habit of digging his face side to side
trying to clear his nose right into the sore spot ;(
I've tried hot towels, tried hot showers, hand expressing, pumping, extra
nursing etc etc and it's not going the hell away and I'm ready to lop the
damn thing off! If' this doesn't clear up by Monday I'm gonna have to go see
an LC which isn't covered by my insurance and I really can't afford but
she'll be able to tell my midwife what to do in case I need to take it to
the next level. I know Bub isn't ready to wean yet so that's not an option
(even at 19 months) I was even desperate enough to ask DH to try and clear
it for me last night *grumbles* I'm such a wimp when it comes to pain.

I had sick baby a week ago, then a plugged duct (first
time!) Wednesday night, then AF on Friday. :P Caterpillar
cleared up the duct around 2:30 Thursday morning; before
that, she wouldn't nurse long or hard enough. I think I
must have had a pre-AF supply dip, because she suddenly
switched from one side per night feeding to 2 or 3 during
the Wednesday / Thursday night.

I tried everything to clear it on my own, and nothing worked
for me, either,

That's exactly the problem I'm having! I've decided I need to borrow
someone's newborn for a day or two LOL
If Bub would nurse long enough on the side and stay the hell still then I
think the duct would clear but he just wants to play around and keep
switching...and of course you know he has to bonk the sore one in the middle
of the switch ;(

I'm not worried about AF showing up. I haven't had any other PMS symptoms
(and I'm one of those lucky ones that gets them ALL)

I'm hoping it's gone by Monday morning, if not I'm RUNNING to my nearest LC
and then to my midwife so hopefully they can help with something a little
more agressive...even if it's drain the damn duct.

Jen,

I think you're definitely onto something with that correlation. I've had a
couple of plugged ducts recently and DD has had a stuffy head. She certainly
has a harder time nursing efficiently when she can't breathe.

Fortunately for me, her nose cleared up quite quickly and she unplugged me.
I hope Nicolas can do the same for you.

I know, it sucks bad enough when they're sick, but to be in pain yourself at
the same time just adds insult to injury.

I had a plugged duct this past Saturday, but thankfully DD has not been
sick.

This was the second time I've had a plugged duct. The timing was really
bad too, as I had a family party to go to that evening and lots of
things going on that day. The duct got very hard and painful very
quickly.

What worked for me both times I got one was filling a bowl about a
quarter of the way with hot water, putting it on my kitchen table and
then basically just bending over and letting my breast soak in the
water. I did that, and I encouraged DD to nurse as much as possible, in
a lot of goofy positions (trying to point her chin at the
plug)...hanging over her while she was on the bed or changing table,
football hold (which I rarely use), etc. It took about 3-4 hours from
the discovery of my plug to when it went away (within minutes of my time
to leave for the party).
