Antibiotics and preventing thrush
I just got put on a two-week course of amoxycillin for a sinus
infection, so of course I want to do everything I can to try to prevent me or DD (almost 6 months old) from getting thrush. I'll certainly take acidopholus - but when's the best time to take it? At the same time as the amoxycillin, or in between doses? Anything else I should be doing? Jeanne |

Jeanne Take it 1-2 hours after the antibiotic. If you take it at the same time, the antibiotic will kill the acidopholus. |

Jeanne When my son was taking amoxycillin for ear infection, I dosed both of us with acidophilus. I took 3 capsules a day, with meals. I timed his to be in between the 2 doses of antibiotic in a 24 hour period. I can't recall which type of acidophilus I used - I got it from a pharmacy, and it had to be kept refrigerated. (Neither of us got thrush, btw.) If I were you, I'd give it to the baby, too; or possibly feed him yogurt with acidophilus. Clisby |

Hmmm...would taking acidophilus help prevent thrush in a newborn, if the mom is having antibiotics during labor for Group B strep? Obviously, the newborn wouldn't be able to have yogurt! My son was 11 months old, so I just sprinkled it on cereal or applesauce. He never objected, so it must not taste too bad. Clisby |

I had to take a course of antibiotics when DS was a week old due to an infection I had following his birth. I was very paranoid about us getting thrush from it. I ate yogurt daily and took Caprylic Acid supplements (my mom swears by that as a yeast infection treatment). We didn't get thrush. You can buy Caprylic Acid at health food stores. Best wishes to you! -- Em mama to L-baby, 6.5 months old! |

Thanks, all! As it happened, we were just about ready to start solids
anyway, so we went ahead and tried rice cereal. She LOVES it, and I've been mixing some acidopholus into that, as well as taking it myself. One week in, and no sign of yeast problems so far! (Now let me find some wood to knock on...) Jeanne |
