If you read the OP and the other posts, you will see that she has been
on medication since she was 2 1/2 years old.

She did have a prevention plan in place, I am sure.

I guess what it boils down to is I read your post Beth, and I saw a
chide in there implying that Barbara isn't caring for her asthma
correctly according to your standards. I'm just trying to point out
that with severe asthma, you can do all the prevention in the world,
and still end up either in the hospital or dead. Asthma is a killer
disease. I don't think sending guilt along to someone in the hospital
is very fair.

Beth didn't make any wild assumptions above. Barbara's mother, Katie,

Now, is there something about asthma prevention and maintenance that I'm
not understanding?

BTW, I love Barbara, and I'm SO glad that she's going to be okay. I
hope she will do what she can to prevent another episode like this.
(And, IIRC, I hope Naomi has investigated a preventive plan for her DD
as well.)

That's good advice. Also, there is a new asthma med that just received FDA
approval. It's called Xolair

Um...well in reading the OP, I noted that Barb was treating symptomatically.

As a respiratory therapist with 17 years experience and a former instructor of
an asthma education class, I thought I thought I'd pass along some info I
thought might be helpful. Xolair *just* became available this month so I
thought maybe it's something she could ask her pulmonologist about. It might
not be appropriate for her case, but it couldn't hurt to ask.

Anyway, I'm glad to see that Barb is doing much better.
