Ped Med: Expanding the ADHD criteria By LIDIA WASOWICZ UPI Senior Science Writer SAN FRANCISCO, March 1 (UPI) -- With each update of the official manual of mental illnesses, the criteria for diagnosing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder have evolved, expanded and enlarged. By 1994 ADHD -- which made its debut in the handbook of psychiatry in 1980 -- had spread out into three subtypes: inattentive, hyperactive/impulsive and a mix of the two. The last is now the most commonly diagnosed. |
