Do they use organic milk making formulas?

Hi,

Anybody happens to know if those regular formulas out there for infants and
toddlers (Similac, Efimil, ...) are made of organic cow milk or not? In
other words, do those milk-based formulas use regular milk that coming from
cows eating antibiotics and BGH or not?

I would think at least those for infants under 12 months should be but
since none of them listed/labelled organic, I hesitate to believe those
companies would omit such important marketing oppotunity.

On a separate note, after turning one year old, would it make much
difference giving baby "older formulas" (such as similac2), or just cow
milk, maybe even organic cow milk will be better?? If so, which organic
milk/powder do you use/recommend?

I wouldn't be so sure about that, since the FDA does not believe that milk
from cows taking hormones or antibiotics is any different. Since I
discovered that hormones in milkcows are legal in the US I immediately
switched to milk that doesn't contain any and has this listed on the label.
I don't know about formula, I never checked when we bought it since I
wasn't aware of this issue at the time.

I never saw the need for toddler formula, unless you have a baby that is a
difficult eater, and behind in length or not gaining enough weight. We
switched to whole milk when DS was 12m (do that gradually!) and nowadays
buy the home brand from Whole Foods. It's not organic but close enough for
us and reasonably priced.

I think the OP WAS saying that it seemed unlikely to be organic since it
wasn't labeled as such and with the beginnings of consumer awareness,
not labelling an organic product to draw attention to that would be a
marketing oversight.

FWIW, do you also use organic meat? "normal" meat is produced using
hormones and antibiotics.

I can't say for sure but I find it impossible to believe they would make
formula out of organic milk. I can't see much of a market for organic
formula. I would think just about anyone who cares that much about
buying organic (and is physically able to of course) would breastfeed.

I think your son's pediatrician could better tell you if cow's milk is
sufficient or if your son would benefit from continuing formula, based
on his weight, height, past growth pattern, and the rest of his current
diet.

What I did with my first child was breastfeed for 14 months,
transitioning to organic cow's milk starting at about 12.5 months. I
bought Horizon brand because that's what was available at my grocery
store. No formula, ever. Plan to do likewise for the new baby.

Formula contains a lot of stuff besides cow's milk, so I doubt the
formula could be labeled organic just because the milk used in it was
organic. However, I also doubt organic milk is used - I do think the
formula manufacturers would at least put that on the label as a
marketing tool if it were true.

Ah, I see. I didn't quite get that, I must confess I was somewhat confused
by that part. It is strange to see that this is only just starting here in
the US, whereas in northern Europe organic stuff was widely available and
only marginally more expensive.

We do when we have meat. It took a while to find our way around in the US,
but whenever we had meat back in Europe it was organic. When we moved here
we resorted to "regular" meat for a while about once a week, and now and
then freshly caught fish. Since a few months we have discovered Whole
Foods, and now buy most of our dairy and meat products there. Also veggies
and fruits, as long as they are not outrageously overpriced, since our
budget is limited. But boy, the flavour of organic sirloin stake would
make me save up for it for a month if I had to!

I read that Horizon (which makes organic dairy products) has an Organic
formula. I've never seen it at Whole Foods, but I haven't been looking
either.

organic formula. It's the first.
