Two Moms to Be on Baby's Birth Certificate In New Jersey

Gay Rights Ruling Wednesday, November 15, 2006 MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. - Two women will be listed as parents on the birth certificate of a baby born this week in New Jersey, one of the first implications of a state Supreme Court ruling that gives same-sex couples access to the same rights as married couples. The state and the women agreed in a closed family court proceeding Monday, the day before the child was born, that both women should be listed in light of the landmark high court ruling. A judge agreed with the state and the women, lawyers said. In New Jersey, birth certificates are typically mailed to parents. Assistant Attorney General Patrick DeAlmeida said the women are the first he knows of to take advantage of new rights granted by the Oct. 25 ruling. The Burlington County women, who are registered as domestic partners, did not want their names made public, their attorney Stephen Hyland said. Under state law, the husband of a woman who gives birth through artificial insemination is listed on the birth certificate as the father. No such provision is made for lesbian couples, who often go through lengthy and costly adoptions to give both women equal rights as parents. Parental rights are especially important to children because they establish inheritance rights and custody should a parent die. Listing both parents on a birth certificate also allows the child to be covered by the health insurance of either parent. The state Supreme Court ruling said the state must extend all the rights of marriage to gay couples and gave lawmakers six months to work out the details - including whether the unions should be called "marriages." The kid will hate them when he/she is old enough to understand what they have done to him/her. |

Isn't it wonderful? It is way over due. Wonderful? You have got to be joking. It demonstrates the disregard and selfishness that homosexuals show toward their children. They give no thought to what the consequences of their act may be on the child's future. All the civil rights laws ever passed have not removed the bias against blacks in America. There has been, there is and there always will be bias against homosexuals too. Regardless of how many laws are passed, the child, though it be innocent, will suffer from that bias. You can bet on that... |

There has been, there is and there always will be bias against homosexuals too. Regardless of how many laws are passed, the child, though it be innocent, will suffer from that bias. You can bet on that... You know what? I can't recall a single time when anyone scrutinized my birth certificate to see what names were on it. I've needed it to get official IDs made, but even then, it was more a "ok, there it is" type of thing. What's more, in this day and age when so many names which used to be male are given to females, gender's hardly obvious by name. So no, even if you believe that having homosexual parents is something that will haunt the child, I don't see a major problem long-term due to the birth certificate. And, given the number of kids I've seen suffer due to only having one parent (many of whom don't even know who their fathers are), I have a hard time criticizing two loving, caring women who choose to raise a child. Better that the child have two mommies than to have only one. |

Interesting how you assume anybody who defends civil rights must have a direct, personal stake. Says a great deal about your moral fiber. Hate to tell you this but when you see a majority indulging in an orgy of legislation, it means they can see their own end and are desperately trying to shore up their control. Fact is, the base of the anti-gay sentiment is in the pre-boomers. A demographic that cannot help but shrink over time because, well, humans get old and die. It's a generational shift. You know that when the first law against interracial marriage was struck down, the public was as much as 90% opposed to allowing interracial marriage? People reacted the same way, acting as if the very republic were at stake. Now, nobody cares. Attitudes change. Life goes on. -- Mark K.
