Default kindergarten age requirement

Is 5 years the general age requirement to enroll a kid into
kindergarten? Does anyone know of any circumstances where a younger kid
may be enrolled into kindy? Anecdotal info is appreciated as well.

Thanks.

i started at almost 4 (my birthday is mid-September) because
i was reading the dictionary for fun by then. i started
reading just before i turned 3 & read everything with print
from cereal boxes to the newspaper.
my parents felt if i waited another year to start school i'd
be really bored.

Each state/country/whatever has different requirements. That said, in
New York state, kindergarten is compulsory at age 6 (if they are going
to be 6 at the start of the school year, they MUST enroll.) In
general, kids are 5 YO when starting school here. 4 YO's are allowed,
space permitting, as long as they are 5 by December 1st (school here
starts in September.)

Short answer to your question? Yes, I believe 5 is typical for most,
at least in the US.

Good day,

Joe

If you're talking about public schools, you generally
don't have a whole lot of choice. Deadlines usually range
anywhere from early summer to the end of the calendar year.
Some districts will be flexible on the deadlines, and others
won't. So, you'll need to know the policy for your specific
schools.
I assume you've got a younger kid you want in school.
The good news is that high quality pre-K often isn't all that
hard to find. So, even if your school district isn't flexible
with deadlines, you probably have other options.
If you have a kid you want to put in kindy early
because you believe he or she is very bright, I would
look into the resources available in your area for gifted
education and see what alternatives you have. While
grade acceleration is a strategy for handling gifted
kids, and in some cases it's the only viable strategy,
in general it's not a great strategy. It tends to put
them out of synch socially (which is a double whammy for
those gifted kids who are less socially skilled), and
it doesn't really address their needs. It doesn't present
more complex material, go deeper into material, or go
faster through material. All it does is cut out a year
of material and then chuck them into the next grade
where as soon as they're caught up with the material,
they'll likely be bored as ever.

Best wishes,
Ericka

Move to a different state. IN Va, the state cutoff is December 10. In TN,
it's September 1. My daughter, with a November 25 birthday, will be starting
school a full year later than a friend of mine's daughter, who was born on
the same day, same year-but lives in a different state.

Or, send your child to private school, where age requirements are more
fluid.

Some states allow children to be assessed for early entry into kindergarten,
but this varies. In general, if you have a 3rd party assessment done on your
child, AND they qualify as intellectually gifted, the school may allow early
entry if the psychologist doing the testing recommends it as part of the
child's IEP, if you're in one of the states where intellectually gifted
students qualify for an IEP.

It depends on the laws of the state as well as the policies of the local
school districts.

Diferent places have age cut-offs that let kids who are 4 1/2 or 4 3/4 into
kindergarten. Other places let kids start kindergarten at 6.

Jeff

Thanks.

Find your state on this list. But it may depend on whether the state law
applies to all districts. Some districts may be allowed to have their own
cut-off date.
