Dentistry question and CTTS
Younger DD took a bad fall in PE yesterday and broke off one
of her front teeth. Permanent tooth, of course. There is temporary bonding material on it now, and they will put on the permanent stuff to build it back up to full size in several weeks. On our estimate for that visit, there is a line for nitrous oxide. Has anyone's kids used this? How did it go? I had it once as a teenager and hated it. I will be calling the office later to find out if it's really necessary for a non-invasive, if somewhat long, procedure. The CTTS: on the way home from the dentist, she sighs and says "This is my *second* mid-life crisis." (The first was some stitches several years ago.) I managed not to laugh and said "It was a crisis, but mid-life comes later." DD: "Around 27 or so?" Lesley |

Nitrous is fairly standard for use in Australia, we use it during childbirth as well. It is also very easily available (if you know these things) in the supermarkets, the type of whipped cream canister where you pour in your thin cream, add a bulb of gas and twist to make whipped cream uses nitrous oxide. When my friends found that out in high school I became very popular because I had one of those canisters. But I digress.... As far as I'm concerned, nitrous is lovely while you are breathing it because it acts kind of like a twilight anaesthetic - you are aware of what's going on around you but it doesn't really bother you. Once you finish breathing it and take another breath the effects wear off. I once described it to a friend as feeling kind of drunk for a very short time. The only side effects I've ever had were a sense of deja vu (which makes sense because most of the time I was lying on a dentist's chair staring up at the light, so of course I would see the same thing every time I used it!) and depending on the mix of oxygen to nitrous I would sometimes find it a little hard to breathe, like a tight-chested feeling. -- Cheryl Mum to Shrimp (11 Mar 99), Thud (4 Oct 00) and Mischief (30 Jul 02) |

I had nitrous oxide when I was 9 and had several baby teeth pulled. I liked it. I felt like I was floating, and was basically unaware of the passage of time: the dentist was actually finishing up when I thought he was starting. Good luck! --Robyn |
