Default Reflux starting at age eight?

Has anyone ever had an older child develop reflux? I know it's not uncommon
in babies and adults, and DS8 has been fine until now - he's in 2nd grade.

He's had a rough school year attendance-wise, he's missed twelve days and
that's not counting the days where I picked him up early, because he vomited
up his lunch (school rule - if you vomit or have a fever, you go home). I
had noticed that he'd stopped eating things he formerly liked, namely cheese
or anything with cheese on it, beef, pork, and fruit juices.
He is a perfectionist/overacheiver/worrywart/borderline obsessive (I call
him a "noodge" ) kind of kid, does well in school, and pretty much gets
along with everyone, but gets impatient with those that can't keep up with
him. The school nurse first suggested reflux after the zillionth time he
came into her office after lunch after either vomiting or complaining that
he had a stomachache. The ped. didn't want to put him through a bunch of
invasive tests so she just put him on Prevacid, which has been magical. He
even asks to take it every morning.

Can I look forward to him growing out of this? Thanks.

I looked into this a bit and found that reflux is not uncommon among
children as they enter puberty and typically clears as they finish the
transition through puberty. One study even found that the rhinitis that is
associated with puberty and hormonal changes can contribute to reflux and
reflux can contribute to rhinitis causing what can seem like a never ending
cycle.

Though the information is not very proliferative, at least what I was able
to find does point to an end in sight, and early hormonal changes leading to
puberty typically begin around the age of 8 now.

HTH,

Cindi
