Default Expecta -- DHA supplement

Hello,

I'm 7 weeks pregnant with #2 and I had my first prenatal appointment
with the nurse. I received the welcome bag with some samples and one
of them is a DHA supplement for pregnant and nursing women. I've only
heard of that in formula. The name of the product is expecta and it
is made by Enfamil. It is supposed to help the baby's brain
development.

Is there any evidence that this product is good during pregnancy?
They're saying that "experts" suggest a 300mg intake during pregnancy,
and the average american takes only 50mg/day...

I thought that we can produce it on demand because it was first found
in breast-milk and then used in formula, but I can be wrong.

Anyways, does it worth the $15/month or not. Can it cause any damage
if a person is already eating more DHA than the average american (I
eat omega3 eggs and salmon pretty often)?

Thanks
Anne

If you're consuming plenty of DHA rich foods you probably don't need it, but
I can't see that taking the sample you have would do any harm. In general,
it's just another ploy to get money out of parents, and you'll do fine
without it. The body can't make DHA though, it can be converted from ALA to
an extent, but it isn't just produced.

Thanks Amy, that's what I thought.

Yeah that's what I also read afterwards it can be produced only from
ALA. I didn't mean produced from scratch...
