What's typical for a 1-year-old?
My son will be 1 next month -- wow! -- and he's still nursing 8x/day, plus
he takes 2 solids meals. I'm wondering how much bf'ing is typical at 1 year. I remember a neighbor telling me that she had her first child totally weaned by his first birthday, and geez, even if I wanted to do that, it would be totally out of the question. DS doesn't eat a wide enough variety of foods for me to consider cutting back on breastmilk. Also, I plan to let DS wean as he wishes, but I'm curious to know when babies begin to let go of some feedings. How long will he still be nursing 8x/day? And which feedings are the first to go? -- Alpha mom to Eamon and Quinn |

IMO that so varies from child to child. My 25 mth old DD can STILL nurse 8
times a day on some days. I think the last sessions to go are before sleeping times in general. My DD started to let go of nursing a *little* bit at around 18 months, but she's still pretty attached to it. Her "snack" sessions are the least important, so like mid-morning and mid afternoon. I think all babies are different in this regard though. I would wait for Larry to respond as I think his kids hold one of the records here for the oldest to wean!!! Congrats on making it to age one. Doesn't the time go fast?!!! cy "Alpha" wrote in message ink.net... My son will be 1 next month -- wow! -- and he's still nursing 8x/day, plus he takes 2 solids meals. I found that nursing was making me so tired that I had to cut down (it was getting to the point where I was so tired I sometimes thought I was going to be violent towards DD). DD never asks for nursing - I would offer, and she would always accept! So I stopped offering as often. By her 1st birthday, she was down to 3-4 times. We stuck to breakfast, lunch and before bed - she didn't miss the snacks in between (and as we are currently on a nursing strike, I desperately want at least one of those 3 to be reinstated - soon). But then I have a friend with a now 15 month old, who nursed for the final time on his first birthday - he self-weaned. So everyone is different. Cathy |

[ . . . ] I don't have any insight into what's typical, but your son sounds a lot like mine, who turned one on March 8. Occasionally when he's very "busy" (playing, walking, etc.) he'll sort of forget a typical nursing session, but for the most part he's still nursing in the 8x/day range. Two solids meals per day is also his usual, and we still need to introduce many more foods before he's even approaching a balanced diet via solid food. -- Belphoebe |

By 15 months he was down to 4-5 times a day, and now at age 2, its usually twice a day. Clisby |

How long will he still be nursing 8x/day? I have no idea. I wasn't patient enough to find out ;-) Hunter nursed like that up until about 19 months. Between me trying to wean him and my supply dipping due to pregnancy he weaned rather quickly then. He was done at 20mos. I did try to wean him at 16 months - didn't work at all. I night weaned (for the most part) Luke at 18 months so at that time he went down to probably about 6 (give or take depending on the day) but again - I instigated that. At 24 months I got him down to four and I weaned him cold turkey off of those at 26 months. I think if I could get my kids to nurse 2-3 times a day with out it being a constant struggle I could nurse a lot longer. -- Nikki Mama to Hunter (4) and Luke (2) |

Definitely a big YMMV. My ds was still nursing at least 8x a day at a year, and at 2 years was still 5-8x a day. He was never very big on routine, so it's hard to say which feedings went first - it seemed like it was different every day. Since you've got a frequent nurser, I'd guess it will take a while to diminish naturally, but it's hard to tell. If I hadn't gotten pregnant, who knows how long ds would have gone! Now, at 2.66 years, he's weaned (I think!), and I'm 36 weeks pg. Remember, of course, that some of nursing frequency has to do with food intake, and some is purely emotional. So, as your ds eats more solid food, he won't need as much breastmilk for nutrtion, but OTOH, nursing is a wonderful way to deal with the frustrations of the toddler years, and so you may find yourself doing a lot of comfort nursing to help with "owies" and tantrums. He went through a phase where it seemed like he wanted to nurse any time he saw me sitting--big growth and development spurt, I guess--and that didn't slow down until he was over two years old. I think it's GREAT that you're going to let your child nurse as long as he wishes. I can't tell you which feedings your son will let go of first, but I can bet that the last to go will be before/after nap, bedtime and wake-up time. Enjoy! dragon |

Hi Alpha,
Alpha writes: : Also, I plan to let DS wean as he wishes, but I'm curious to know when : babies begin to let go of some feedings. Your baby sounds a lot like Clara. She was probably nursing that much at one year. If I remember correctly she started dropping the day feeding way long before she dropped the night feeding. I would start when she would go to the park and play for a couple of hour before remembering to nurse. I think by 14 to 16 months she was down to 6 or 8 a day, but that included 3 - 4 night nursings. : -- Alpha : mom to Eamon and Quinn Larry |

I put her in her chair when DS and I are eating, but she often consumes very, very little during those times. Snacks are things like crackers, cheerios, etc, given mid-morning and mid-afternoon. She nurses an average of 4/5 times during the day, and often as many times at night (though on my good nights, she only nurses 2 or 3 times). DS was pretty similar, if I can recall correctly. Neither of my kids really *asks* (or, in DS's case, asked) to nurse; they just get fussy, and sometimes a cracker or water helps, other times, it's nursing that soothes them. With DS, he got to the point around 18 months that other food or comforting/distraction would suffice, and only needed to nurse at sleep times, or if he hurt himself. He night weaned at around 20 months, and weaned entirely (with some pushing from me, as I was 5 months pregnant, but with very little resistance) at 22 months. -- Jodi SAHM to Oliver (3 years) & Arwen (11 months) |
