Default Bowel problem seen in infants given Merck vaccine

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Food and Drug Administration said it
was notifying health-care providers and consumers about reports of
some 28 cases of infants suffering a serious bowel condition after
receiving Merck & Co's new vaccine against the rotavirus.

And in the control group, the same bowel problem was seen more frequently
than in the group that got the vaccine.

Because the old Rotashield had a bad reputation because of this same
problem, the FDA and CDC are watching for this carefully. I don't even know
if it turned out that kids who got Rotashield were more likely to get this
or not.

no surprise there, last one was withdrawn
http://www.whale.to/vaccines/rotavirus.html

BL Fisher Note:

Infant diarrhea, properly managed, rarely fatal in the US and children who
recover from rotavirus infection have immunity.

Merck's live rotavirus vaccine (RotaTeq) contains five human-bovine (cow)
reassortment rotaviruses. Stanley Plotkin, M.D.
http://www.whale.to/a/plotkin.html, Fred Clark, D.V.M., Ph.D.,
and Paul Offit, M.D.are U.S. and international patent holders of the
vaccine. Offit and Clark are on the faculty of the Children's Hospital of
Philadelphia. Plotkin is also a patent holder of the rubella vaccine and is
associated with the Wistar Institute.

By adding a diarrhea (rotavirus) vaccine to the routine childhood vaccine
schedule, American children will now be subjected to 57 doses of 15 vaccines
by age 12. By 8 weeks old, an infant will have received 9 doses of 8
vaccines and 8 of those doses can be given on a single day.

Were there long term studies of RotaTeq in combination with 7 other
vaccines? Was there an evaluation of antibody response and adverse events
relative to genetic or other biological differences between children? Was
there any long term follow up to determine whether there are long term
negative effects on the developing immune system and brain of infants when
they are given RotaTeq along with 7 other vaccines on a single day twice in
the first four months of life and once with 8 other vaccines on a single day
at age 6 months - compared to infants who receive no vaccines at all?

And so far, the number of cases of intussusception seems to be the same
number that would be expected if there were no vaccine. In other words, the
vaccine doesn't have any effect on the rate of intussusception.

So do kids who get the vaccine. That are also more than one strain, and kids
can get infected more than once without the vaccine. Rarely fatal means that
it does kill some kids. So the vaccine does save lives. And it saves many
hospitalizations and sick days for parents.

When did they say that?

If I recall correctly, the vaccine make found that there was a higher rate
of intussusception, especially, intussusception during a particular time
period after giving the vaccine, and then pulled the vaccine.

they lie

Where did they lie? They came right out and told us about the problems.

The fact is that Rotavirus kills around 40 kids a year in the US. Although
the number of intussusception cases needs to be followed very carefully,
there is no evidence that this vaccine cauess intussuception.

The old vaccine was pulled from the market because of liability issues, not
because the vaccine caused intussusception. Below is a article from the
Journal of Infectious Diseases about this vaccine and intussusception.
