Default Baby care items- wipes, diapers, wash questions etc!

I am trying to get a list together of items I want to have on hand as
starters and items that are well-liked to try. I know it;s different for all
but I do hear a lot of the same opinions about good products etc. The same
brands keep coming up in praise etc....I would like any suggestion or rec's.
I am going to ask about formla so those who is can tell me what works well
for their baby so I will know, I hope to end up breastfeeding though....I
know I won't use cloth diapers I will need disposables...

1. Best Baby wash?
2. Best baby wipes? (no desire to make my own, need brand recs)
3. best disposable diapers?
4. Good formula brand and type?
5. Best diaper rash cream?
6. Best bottles, brand and type?
7. Best baby lotion?
8. Is there anything you MUST have, or NEVER use (baby powder, baby oil,
etc?
9. Other good babycare products to have?
10. WHat should I have on hand for when I bring the baby home, and what do I
need to have in a diaper bag before leaving the house?

Thanks for any info!

I am going to ask about formla so those who is can tell me what works well
for their baby so I will know, I hope to end up breastfeeding though....I
know I won't use cloth diapers I will need disposables...

1. Best Baby wash?

I love Baby Magic's smell, it didn't agree with Baby 3's skin. So we
settled for Aveeno.

2. Best baby wipes? (no desire to make my own, need brand recs)

Whatever's on sale. Luvs most of the time.

3. best disposable diapers?

Anything but the yellow package from Wal-mart. Every kid is different
though. Baby 1 did fine in all disposable diapers (I'm mainly a cloth
diaper user though.) Kid 3 did best in Luvs.

4. Good formula brand and type?

If you plan on breastfeeding why even buy formula before hand? I wouldn't.
Its too easy to say, but there's formula in the kitchen. Plus every baby
reacts differently to formulas.

5. Best diaper rash cream?

Aveeno when I've needed it.

6. Best bottles, brand and type?

Same question as the formula. I'm fond of the Playtex nursers for
breastmilk.

7. Best baby lotion?

Aveno or Baby Magic. Mostly due to my nose's preference.

8. Is there anything you MUST have, or NEVER use (baby powder, baby oil,
etc?

I love baby powder. Never saw a need for baby oil. Couldn't live without
cloth diapers for burp rags.

9. Other good babycare products to have?

Everyone needs a good baby snot sucker. Most hospital gives them to you
though.

10. WHat should I have on hand for when I bring the baby home, and what do

I
need to have in a diaper bag before leaving the house?

In our diaper bag (we have 3 kids, but its stayed the same since the
beginning pretty much)
Diapers, wipes, sanitizing hand gel for after I change baby, at least one
set of extra clothes, burp rags, diaper rash cream, and snacks (for me).

Default Baby care items- wipes, diapers, wash questions etc!

1. Best Baby wash?
I love J&J Bedtime Bath, I love the way it smells.

2. Best baby wipes? (no desire to make my own, need brand recs)
Huggies Natural Care

3. best disposable diapers?
DD#1 always had Pampers Premium. DD#2 started with Pampers Newborn but now is
in Huggies Supreme, I like them just as well.

4. Good formula brand and type?
I personally cannot breastfeed exclusively(IGT) and have used formula from one
week on. I started with Similac Advance, but now use a generic version of the
same thing that costs a lot less. I would talk to your ped about it too.

5. Best diaper rash cream?
The yucky, smelly, original A&D is the only thing I have bought after trying
all the zinc oxide creams. DD#1 contantly had rashes and this was the only
thing that ever worked on her.

6. Best bottles, brand and type?
So many people swear by Avent but I could NEVER get them to stop leaking, even
with every suggestion anybody ever gave. DD#1 used Playtex disposables, with
the natural silicone nipple. They were a lot easier to use since you were not
washing as many things, but are not too economical if that is a concern for
you. DD#2 uses Evenflo, I forget the name, they are curved bottles that you
can only find at Babies R Us and Baby Depot. I don't have any major
complaints, but if we were not on such a tight budget, I would be using the
disposables.

7. Best baby lotion?
I bought two bottles of lotion for #1 and both are more than half way full,
almost three years later. Can't help you on that one.

8. Is there anything you MUST have, or NEVER use (baby powder, baby oil,
etc?
I never used powder or oil, never even had any. Must haves? Not really. #2
is getting away with only the necesities and I feel nothing is missing.

9. Other good babycare products to have?
If you are going to be using formula at some point, one of the powdered formula
containers is nice, although you can always measure it and put it in a plastic
bag or container as well.

10. WHat should I have on hand for when I bring the baby home, and what do I
need to have in a diaper bag before leaving the house?
Alcohol for the cord, and cotton balls or qtips to apply the alcohol. A pad to
change baby, or you can just use a towel, that is what I did with #1. Just
have all the usual items in the diaper bag, including extra blanket and
pacifier (if using pacifiers), and a snack or bottle of water for yourself.

Hope some of the is helpful

Oh, formula is one thing I am not buying ahead of time. If I end up needing
formula for any reason I would like to know a few good kinds. How do you
pick a formula anyway?? You can't know how it will do until you try it, are
there guidelines for choosing the first trial brand or two? I am keeping
formula in mind, because I want to b/f, but don't know if it will work out
for many reason including medications I may have to take...

There are tons of bfing safe medications, so make sure you research that if
you end up needing medication for anything. I dunno about picking formula.
If I had to, I'd just buy the store brand stuff I imagine and try that first
and move on from there depending on how baby acted. I've only had to ff one
kid and she needed special formula that her doctors prescribed.

1. Best Baby wash? alpha keri oil ( water soluble oil)
2. Best baby wipes? (no desire to make my own, need brand recs) curash J&J

gave my DD a red bottom
3. best disposable diapers? I use huggies or VIP's we don't have pampers

here but I've heard they are good.
4. Good formula brand and type? can't say but s26 can give some babies

constipation, I BF then used soy for milk intolerance.
5. Best diaper rash cream? paw paw or zinc or bethpanthen cream
6. Best bottles, brand and type? I used avent but the teats are too fast

for a newborn. Breat feeding is so much easier if you can do it and get past
( i mean hang in) the first 6 weeks to establish it properly.
7. Best baby lotion? used non scented sorboline
8. Is there anything you MUST have, or NEVER use (baby powder, baby oil,
etc? never used baby oil or powder
9. Other good babycare products to have? nope
10. WHat should I have on hand for when I bring the baby home, and what do

I
need to have in a diaper bag before leaving the house? somewhere for the

baby to sleep, nappies, blankets to wrap baby in, a few outfits, something
to catch vomits (bibs or cloth nappies) a place to bath the baby. You really
don't need too much and can buy stuff later when you work out what you want.

Thanks for any info!

I'm in Australia so brands will probably differ...but anyway...

good luck it's fun getting stuff ready.

for most things there is a choice of medications so it's possible to
choose one to use whilst breastfeeding, you can ask over on
misc.kids.breastfeeding for someone to look up in "Hales".

Default Baby care items- wipes, diapers, wash questions etc!

1. Best Baby wash?
all we've used are fine, store own brand, whatever is on offer etc.

2. Best baby wipes? (no desire to make my own, need brand recs)

again whatever is on offer, we've not found any we don't like, nor any
that stand out as being better, we like the ones that have a plastic lid,
so when they are half empty they can be used in the changing bag, which
saves buying travel size packets.

3. best disposable diapers?

we mainly use reusables, but we've had equal problems with all brands (ds
doesn't seem to like the chemicals and gets a rash)

4. Good formula brand and type?

no comment, when we did need to use some we just grabbed one of the shelf,
now we have a stock of cartons which we send as spares to daycare to avoid
ebm wastage, but we haven't actually used one, I'll have to give them away
before they go out of date

5. Best diaper rash cream?

sudocream, don't know if it's available in the states, but all the us
mothers I know who live here use it.

6. Best bottles, brand and type?

Avent, particularly the 4oz ones, we did use the 9oz ones when ds was
taking 6-8oz at a feed, but now he's having some solids and has a direct
from source preference the 4oz ones are great, he can just about hold them
himself now, plus you can buy soft and slightly harder spouts for them so
he uses them for water, you can also use the handles from the magic cup,
but currently ds isn't a big fan of those.

7. Best baby lotion?

Johnsons

8. Is there anything you MUST have, or NEVER use (baby powder, baby oil,
etc?

very rarely used cotton wool, but it is useful to have on occasoion, baby
powder we didn't use routinely, but now have discovered certain areas
which are prone to sore skin its helpful (for us it's behind the ears!)
Never used baby oil, if oil is necessary I use olive oil, but the powder
is currently preventing that.

9. Other good babycare products to have?

hmm, I wouldn't want to be without my sling, also in the early stages a
few muslins are very useful for clearing up dribbles etc, you might be
able to put them away after a couple of months, but then again you might
not!

10. WHat should I have on hand for when I bring the baby home, and what do I
need to have in a diaper bag before leaving the house?

the things we dashed out to buy were extra sheets for the moses basket
(pram size) as he would mess them up so frequently, a muslin covering the
head end slowed down the rate they went in the washing machine.

I go for the capsule approach to a diaper bag, very minmalist. I have 2
nappies (increase to 4 for a newborn or a long day), wipes (set aside the
1/3 full ones from the main changing station), nappy sacks (essential if
there is nowhere you can chuck the dirty nappy), small packet of tissues
(I've gone through 2 packs of 10 in 6 months, but the times I have used
them I've been very glad to have them), changing mat of some sort, sleep
suit and cardigan (currently this gets used about once a month, but you
need it there for those occasions). Add a muslin if you baby is a
posseter.

1. Best Baby wash?

Ivory soap - I didn't bother with baby wash.

2. Best baby wipes? (no desire to make my own, need brand recs)

Store brand.

3. best disposable diapers?

Kroger store brand. I haven't tried Luvs or Pampers - but I like the
Kroger brand better than Huggies.

4. Good formula brand and type?

Whatever agrees with your baby. I've used both Similac and Enfamil with
no problem, and I'm pretty sure there are generic versions of both.

5. Best diaper rash cream?

Anything with ??% zinc oxide (look at a name brand like Desitin and get
something comparable.)

6. Best bottles, brand and type?

Do you mean nipples? I don't see much difference in bottles, except for
the Avent ones. I used the Gerber Nuk nipples with any old bottle they
would fit.

7. Best baby lotion?

House brand.

8. Is there anything you MUST have, or NEVER use (baby powder, baby oil,
etc?

I never used baby shampoo, and almost never used baby powder (well, I
used it me, but not on the baby.) Petroleum jelly is good to have on
hand.

9. Other good babycare products to have?

10. WHat should I have on hand for when I bring the baby home, and what do I
need to have in a diaper bag before leaving the house?

At home: diapers, a place for the baby to sleep, and you, to nurse the
baby. Bottles, formula and nipples if you don't. The rest is optional.

I didn't really need anything in a diaper bag - the hospital provided
everything.

About the diaper bag - I thought you were asking about taking a diaper
bag to the hospital. If you mean in general - I never carried a diaper
bag. I always take a backpack with me, so there's plenty of room for
anything I'd need for a baby. I'd pack a couple of diapers, a thin pack
of wipes (I think it's called a travel size), a changing pad or towel,
and maybe a clean T-shirt or onesie. With the child I formula-fed, I'd
take a clean, empty bottle and a small can of ready-to-feed formula.
That's it.
