Technically, yes. The reason it isn't illegal is because the
government has no problem with your gifting money to them by way of
not taking deductions for which you are entitled (for whatever
reason).

The poster claimed that avoiding red flags equates to dishonesty. I used an
example of such avoidance. How does that make me dishonest?
