I have three kids, and we never made them sit on the potty. A 3 1/2
year old is smart. You pick a date, circle it on the calendar, buy
them new underwear, and go cold turkey. They will figure it out. You
don't need to schedule potty sessions (total waste of time and way
more time and effort than this mom had patience for). Expect a fair
bit of laundry, but the very vast majority of kids your daughter's age
will "get" it within a few days.

Depending on the child, this can backfire. Especially a child who is
afraid to sit on the potty/toilet and has never done so before. If you
take away her diapers, she is still going to be afraid of the toilet.
If she doesn't want to wet her underwear, she may hold her pee until
she is bursting, stretching her bladder. We didn't even get pushy
with our son, and he was happy to sit on the toilet (without letting
anything out), and he still started withholding urine for periods
approaching 24 hours, with negative medical repurcussions, when he
decided he didn't like the feeling of wet diapers, but still didn't
*want* to use the potty.

There are lots of things kids
are quite capable of doing but don't necessarily WANT to do, including
picking up toys. Sometimes some low level parental direction is not
only needed, but a Good Thing for everyone in the bigger picture.

This is true in general, but when it comes to things like toileting
and eating, where the parent can't truly take control, sometimes
making things like this a battle turns out to be a very bad idea.

When kids don't WANT to use the potty, you really can't make them,
and the alternative is not fun.
