Default cord blood collection

Hi,
Does anyone have any preferences for cord blood collection companies. I am
hearing a lot about Viacord. Any positive or negative feedback is
appreicated.
Thanks.
Kathy

How about "none of them"?

In the negative feedback category -- they're a racket. Under many
circumstances if the child itself later became sick with one of the
very few, rare illnesses that cord blood transplantation could treat,
many oncologists wouldn't even use the stored blood for fear that the
leukemia (or whatever disease) was present in the cells of the cord
blood. The likelihood of another family member needing the cord blood
is vanishingly small, and it would have to be a child because one baby
doesn't have enough cord blood to transplant a teenager or adult (they
need to use 2 or 3 units). If you already have a family member who
may benefit from the child's cord blood, talk to that person's doctor,
as he or she will have the most reliable recommendation for your area.

It's completely different if you're talking about donating cord blood
to a national registry. The numbers of people involved both as donors
and potential recipients is large enough there that you might actually
be able to match a sick person to appropriate blood. But spending
money to privately store cord blood is extremely profitable for the
company and a waste for the family.

We donated Alexander's cord blood. It has yet to be used at this time.
Which means that is he were to need that cord blood for any reason,
it's waiting as a perfect match for him....at no cost to us.
