Sweden. Well, did it?
The claim, by some Christianity motivated "researchers," such as
Lazrlere, is that child abuse went up in Sweden after the spanking ban. The question should have been, did PARENTAL abuse of children go up? Here's a thought: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...&dopt=Abstract "... METHOD: All police reports on physical child abuse (0-14 years old) in a designated police district in Sweden during 1986-1996 were examined, as well as any judicial proceedings that followed. RESULTS: Our research yielded three major findings. Firstly, a large part of the increased number of police reports had to do with violence outside the family ... " Woops spankers...woops! See that last sentence. Sweden is a country that is largely contiguous in culture from end to end. What is likely to happen in one area is in another as well. So if the data our esteemed "researchers" are using is limited to "physical child abuse" but does NOT differentiate from outside the family to inside the family ties to the spanking ban don't equate with a parental increase in abuse of children. Now if they can come up with proof that parents were the ones doing all that extra child abuse. Of course, if you read this report you'll see much the same thing that you do in this country when it comes to the demographic and associates with abuse. The increase may have NOTHING to do with the ban, and great deal to do with other factors. On of the carefully avoided bits of information by the disinformation specialists when discussing Sweden was that corporal punishment that left marks or injuries was outlawed in 1957. The 79 law was nothing more than a continuation of a trend starting right after WWII. I presume the example of Nazi Germany and the propensity for Germans to beat their children for discipline had a profound effect on thoughtful Swedes, who up until then had the same habit. ...Then there's that claim that Sweden's youth are out of control and more violent....and of course the desire is to lay blame on the spanking ban. Senseless Cargo Cult thinking. Here's the truth: http://www.aboutkidshealth.ca/ofhc/news/Other/3679.asp "...Participation in any fighting, frequency of fighting, injuries sustained in fights, and frequency of weapon carrying were very similar across all five countries. Although there were not significant differences in the other indicators of violence across the countries, there was a consistent ordering of countries, with the lowest levels of violence in Portugal and Sweden, and the highest in Ireland and Israel. Rates of bullying varied, with Sweden reporting the lowest frequency of bullying (14.8%), and Israel the highest (42.9%). Rank ordering of countries also differed on bullying...." This is from a report dated June 2004. I guess about the time a whole lot of unspanked Swedish children are hitting their teens. The nonsense that flows from the pro spank crowd never ceases to amaze. But the cleverness and dedication they bring to their disinformation is an old story for the fundamentalist thinkers, from Dodson to the Pearls. 0:- |
